Coffee Shop Customers

WOW, North Carolina used to be the place with no tobacco taxes. For hundreds of miles along the highways leading to it were huge billboards telling you to stock up in North Carolina. I remember $1.85 a carton at a time when gasoline was 27 cents a gallon. What are they taxing these days?

Traveling Floridians.

Nah. But, the notion of turning I-95 in the state into a toll road is floated on occasion and not laughed at.

We've got a state income tax and a sales tax meted out at county level. Some places have additional taxes to pay for local efforts. E.g., Charlotte has a tax to fund light rail. The governor wanted to boost the cigarette tax to $1.35 per pack. That didn't pass, but defeat wasn't a sure thing. The current rate is 45 cents.

The demographics of this place have changed, and are changing.
