I see a lot of these 50 lenses on cameras here in RFF. How do they work? Do they collapse right into the camera body? How do you use them?....fully extend and then focus? would this fit on my M2? And finally, what kind of pictures do they produce? examples if you have any. thanks😕

OOPS!! Elmarit.
Just checked AGAIN! is there an elmarit and an elmar? I'm losing it.

If you fold a 50 Elmar down, then your M2 will fit in your pocket, which was the idea. It's a bit fiddly for me, because I have to re-focus each tme I change the aperture. But I'm getting used to that, and believe me, it's a great lens. Same with the 90mm Elmar, it's amazingly small when folded (for a 90) and the build quality of these lenses amazes me, they are delightful. I put Dymo labeling tape on both of mine, so they can't collapse anymore, and destroy my M5. Never owned an Elmarit.

I have the latest version 50mm Elmar M, and I absolutely love this lens. In use, you simply pull the lens out and rotate to lock it into position. Proper alignment is a snap.

You also get the opportunity to make some dreamy out-of-focus images when you forget to pull the lens out of the barrel. 😀

All the collapsiple 50's, whether f/3.5 or 2.8, are called Elmar. Lenses of f2.8 are called Elmarit if they are other than 50mm. But the Elmar name was retained for the 50/2.8, for historical reasons. It collapses just like the f/3.5, but takes the 39mm filters.
