I've been looking into a new lens after i accidently banged the side of my last lens in my school backpack, making the aperture ring almost impossible to adjust. I remember looking at the Bessa R review on cameraquest, mentioning the bessa R user who made a scary noise with his collapsible elmar 50mm 3.5 when collpasing it into his bessa r. Does anyone have any good experiences with collapsible 50mm lenses in conjunction with the Bessa R?

I think Joe is right. It's the same problem as with the J12 and its J-Lo behind: there's simply not enough room inside the Bessa to house it all. The collapsibles and the J12 fit nicely on a Leica M or on the FEDs and Zorkis.

I cant help but I can add another question, how many collapsible lenses actually lock in the collapsed possition? (my industar sadly does not)

If collapsibles are a bad way to go for the R, are there any suggestions for a kind of cheap 50mm? I've heard about some people talking about Elmars, do those fit with a Bessa R?

I have collapsed a 50mm Summicron into my Bessa R but it does get hung up sometimes so I stopped using it on the Bessa. I have a smaller 50mm f3.5 collapsible FED lens (a Russian Elmar copy) that fits into my Bessa making a very compact package. I can get it to contact the light baffle inside the Bessa if I angle it downwards, if I angle it upwards then there is no problem. If I'm subjecting the camera/lens to the vibrations of a motorcycle, I keep it extended. My Summicron locks while my 50mm f1.9 Canon and this FED lens do not lock in the collapsed position.

I've haven't used one (yet) and it's not collapsible, but a question beginning with "cheap" and "50mm" around here is usually answered by "Jupiter 8".

You can take a collapsible lens and make it a "partially collapsible" lens by adding a small plastic collar around the lens tube. By cutting just the right length you can reduce the size of the overall package slightly and still keep the back of the lens from doing damage inside of the body cavity.

You can probably get an I-22 or I-50 collapsible for as little as $25.

Industar-22, Industar-61 (L/D), Jupiter 8, Jupiter 3 and a long line of other brands and types. Plenty to choose from both in LTM mount (and M mount for those so inclined).

to collapse or not to collapse

to collapse or not to collapse

I just asked a similar question of Mr Gandy re a Summitar 50 for my new Bessa T and he didn't think it such a good idea, but, as he said, you don't have to collapse the lens, just because it can. If you are interested, I may decide to sell this 50 f/2 anyway, so watch the classifieds. A nice lens, but I'd like something faster.

You can collapse the Summitar in, being careful and "searching" a little for the path. I think it ends up resting on the shutter outter blades tho, it would be a BAD idea to fire the shutter with the lens collapsed.
But, it fits in if necessary..

The new Heliar Classic 50/2 is collapsible. Comes with a Bessa-R2M/R3M body. Can't buy it separately, though.

Sounds like a plan. I must try this someday.

I only put my Summitar on when I need to shoot and remove it when I am done. You run the risk of damaging the blades of the outer shutter when the lens is collapsed because the lens barrel is touching the shutter. Then you might do something absent-minded and fire the shutter before pulling out the lens.

I stopped using my Summitar on my Bessa R --- there were obvious interferences -- I'd simply avoid it. Too bad: It could have been an amazing marriage!

Naturally Voigtlander collapsible lenses should work.

I tried the FED 50/3.5 and it fits nearly perfectly with Bessa R. It can be completely collapsed into the chamber without scratching the shutter.
