If collapsibles are a bad way to go for the R, are there any suggestions for a kind of cheap 50mm? I've heard about some people talking about Elmars, do those fit with a Bessa R?
Look for a nice J8 or even an I61 if you prefer. Both are excellent once adjusted for the Bessa/Leica body.

I have never collapsed any collapsible lens. I get such lenses for the optics and not for reduced length when collapsed.

Antique thread revived, but where are some other RFF threads after this one came with updated info.
Since 2006 it was discovered what Industar-10 is collapsible into Bessa R and Leicas. But better to have rubber band added under front flange of the lens. With I-22 and I-50 even more needs to be added because I-22 and I-50 have longer tubes, while I-10 is copy of Elmar (in construction).
Collapsible Industar on Leica IIf. Best compact, pocketable, metal, fully mechanical kit I ever have.
