I would like a collapsible 50mm f2.0 lens on a IIIf as a compact shooter.

1. Do any hoods reverse on this lens?
2. Does the Elmar-M hood work on this lens?

I know I can use heavystar hoods but I would prefer one that is more compact (like the Elmar M) or one that reverses. If not, then heavystar it is.

The Elmar-M hood will vignette with a filter.

I suggest a 12585 (there are reversible Chinese replicas on ebay, too), and filing a notch into the hood. Like this:

That's what I use anyways.

Again, that won't work with a filter. I tried.

-I forgot to mention but I'm in the filter camp. It looks like the Elmar M hood is a no go.
-I didnt' know they made reversible Chinese hoods...any links? I'd perhaps notch one of those or the 12585.
-Reversing it in the collapsibled position is a necessity.

Thanks for the responses so far!

Here you go, for example: 170697140719@ebay. Not cheap but well built, and cheaper than a real used 12585[H].

BTW, that seller makes a 12504 copy, too (180724802012), which will also work on your collapsible, but won't be as deep as the 12585. But might be useful if you also have a 35 Summicron and want to share the hood ....

Roland.

I've used this Heliopan hood from time to time on my collapsible. It's about 3/4 the length of the modern Elmar hood. I picked it up at a camera show years ago for a few bucks, not sure if they're still available or not.
I'm not a big filter user, but my guess is it would work just fine.

Leica slip on cap works perfectly on it as well.

Well, there goes my retirement. I've got a drawer full of 12585 and 12504 hoods I was planning to dump on the market in a few years. 😀

Vented hoods are good on M's where the finder is in the corner of the camera.
On a Barnacks, though, they usually block too much of the internal finder.
I would stick with the "tubular" concept on this one...

I think it is indeed the best option for the OP

I use heliopan hoods like this on my 90/4 Rokkor and 105/2.5 Nikkor. They are very good.

Heavystar sells similar short hoods, like this: 360579526141@ebay.

Still, they stick out further than an inverted 12585.

I like the 12585 hoods, partly for how well they work, and partly because they absorb a lot of impact if you happen to drop your camera. I have broken a couple hoods this way, but saved a couple of lenses.

If the idea is to have the most compact combo during travel, you are perfectly right.

Interesting, I use that hood on my cron v4 with a filter and it doesn't vignette. Guess I'll try the heliopan when my collapsible comes back from recoating.

The reason it is not possible to invert the 12585 hood on the collapsible Summicron is the focus lever gets in the way. Another Leitz design flaw is that the outer diameter of the screw in UVa filter is smaller than the lens, ensuring the lens cap drops off shortly after you have picked the camera up (usually in the most remote and inaccessible place).

That would be the notch Roland is mentioning
