collapsible lenses

Hi, I'm very new to the R-D1 (one week) and wanting to know whether I can use my Elmar 50/2.8 safely with this camera (assuming at some point I will collapse it into the body). I measure it as being less than 20.5mm when fully collapsed. However the Epson website says "depth from lens mount into camera must be 20.5mm or less. Collapsible lenses or lenses with a lens mount depth of more than 20.5mm must not be used with the Epson Rangefinder R-D1. "... It's that 'OR' that's throwing me.

Has anyone else tried using an Elmar 50/2.8 or other collapsible lens with their R-D1?

Thanks in advance. By the way I am really happy with what I've seen so far from the R-D1. Its the most natural feeling and intuitivey designed digital camera I've ever used!

What I did with my Bessa R that might have the same depth, is to add some O rings on the barrell of the lens, about three, and this will keep the lens from collapsing into any camera parts which might cause damage.

According to the Japanese R-D1 book I have, the only 2 collapsible lenses that will have trouble with R-D1 are Hektor 50mm F2.5 and Elmar 50mm F3.5 only. The other lenses that will cause trouble are Hologon 15mm F8, Super Angulon 21mm F3.4, Super Angulon 21mm F4, Elmarit 28mm F2.8 Ver 1 and Summicron DR.

I have used Summitar and Sumar on my R-D1 without any problem. Hope this helps.

The Summicron DR will mount too, but without the "eyes." I have said 'cron, just hoping to now score a used r-d1 somewhere. And I know someone here uses a collapsible of some sort on the epson, forget which one...

Has anyone else tried using an Elmar 50/2.8 ... with their R-D1?

My (non-LTM) Elmars 50/2.8 of 1962, 1994 & 2004 can collapse harmlessly into the R-D1 but they protrude by a tiny bit less than 20mm into the body when the maximum allowed by the User's Guide (see below) is 20.5mm only.

Excerp of the User's Guide, page 17:

Some M/L mount lenses cannot be used because of the structure of the camera. For example, lenses with external dimensions exceeding 20.5 mm cannot be used with this camera.
Lenses that cannot be used include:
- Hologon 15mm f/8
- Super Angulon 21mm f/3.4
- Super Angulon 21mm f/4
- Elmarit 28mm f/2.8 (earliest model)
- Dual Range Summicron 50mm.
When you mount a collapsible lens, do not collapse the lens after mounting it. Collapsing the lens into the camera by force or mounting the lens while it is collapsed may damage the camera or the lens.
Lenses than can be used but must not be collapsed include:
- Hektor 50mm f/2.5
- Elmar 50mm f/3.5

Thanks for the replies. I've decided I'll use the lens (my only M-mount 50mm) with teh R-D1 but try to remember not to fully collapse the lens. I still find the wording from Epson unclear on this subject (they seem to say you can use lenses that protrude less than 20.5mm but then say don't collapse them).

I think it should read:
Collapsible lenses with a lens mount depth of more than 20.5mm when collapsed, or other lenses with a lens mount depth of more than 20.5mm...

this makes more sense.

Also remember that if it's an LTM lens, the M adapter will add 1mm extra margin.

I use and collaps my 50mm elmar 2.8. It's the newest kind.
