Five Goats Hunter
Hope I spelled that right!
I've got a J-8 with a stiff focusing and aperture ring. So, I think it's time to disassemble, relube, & collimate it (aka, totally destroy) it. This will be my first attempt at doing any of this on a lens.
I'm a little unclear as to the steps involved in a collimating a lens. I know you have to mount your reassembled lens onto a camera with an open back and use a loupe to check the infinity focus. However, I've heard conflicting things as what needs to be placed on the back of the camera to check the focus. I've heard frosted glass, an SLR focusing screen, etc. So, what's the scoop? Also, does it matter what strength loupe I use?
Also: there's a lot of great repair threads on this forum, but they isn't easy to find sometimes. Should we think about setting up a database or some separate area where they're all stickied?
