Collimating Industar 61

Can anyone point me towards info on how to strip down and collimate a 52mm FED Industar 61 "Panda" , it`s pretty heavily front focussing.. I`ll never use this lens on an FSU (I have the Jupiters for that) but would like ONE lens which focusses properly on my RD1 and L-III and as this doesn`t belong to "a Camera" is ideal ..

It certainly doesn`t look as easy as the Jupes where you just unscrew the optic block out so any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks - I Just had a look at Matts site and tried to remove the inner collar inside the rear after removing the long screw and it won`t budge even though I made a cross piece to unscrew it 🙁 . I`ve got your PDF downloading Kim, thanks

Ahh well - it`s TRASHED ........ The Lens spanner thing I made jumped the slots and ripped all the threads .... I`ve changed elements in C & N lenses and never encountered one of these rings as stiff to try and remove as that one

No more Industars for me, I`m sticking with Jupiters, unscrew the front and put in shims..

Ahh well only a Tenner

Hi Adam

If the lens is front focusing you need to collimate the lens module with the focus module. Typically you would reduce the shim thickness to move the lens module back. Unscrewing the rear element will collimate the lens module itself and this is done to change optical performance not to correct focus registration.

While this site teaches you how to collimate infinity, the I-61N has close focus error on my RD-1. I corrected mine by glueing a thin piece of paper onto the focusing cam and vanished it to make it wear resistant. By trail and error and and confirmation using the images on the RD-1, it now focuses perfectly close up. It's crudely done but it works. Please see image attached.

Thanks for the link Joe 🙂 ...... Yeah Tim, reducing shim thickness would correct the front focussing, unlike Jupes though, you can`t just unscrew the optical unit and pop the shim out 🙁 .. It`s a moot point regarding this particular i61 anyway but thanks all the same 🙂 .

If I was to get another Industar, I`d get the L/D one anyway (I thought all i61s were all the same at the time) but to be honest, the sharpness of this one (where it was focussed) at F2.8 was no sharper than a decent Jupe at F2.0, I just like the handling better..

I've used an Industar 61LD on my RD-1s with good result. It is sharp, easy to handle, and it only cost me as much as a decent meal at a metal fork restaurant. Maybe I got lucky and was sent a good unit that really didn't need a "tune-up." I hope you have equal luck.

Thanks Michael - I`ll just see what comes along, I thought all 61s were all the same at the time I got it and learned that they aren`t so no great loss really - the Grub screws etc will come in handy 🙂
