I think that 400h tends to look a bit flat and I prefer Portra 400nc since it seems to have more contrast, while still rendering very natural, realistic colors.
My favorite 400 speed film is Kodak Ultra Color 400, it is unfortunate that Kodak decided to discontinue it:

I love Fuji Pro 400H, but find it uniquely sensitive to scanning technique. If you do your own scanning (and have infinite patience), the film can really reward with incredible results. However, if you're looking for 'out-of-the-box' fine grain, Kodak Portra 400NC and VC seem to deal much better with indiscriminate (read "mini-lab") scanning...

Lately I've been having good luck with cheap 400 speed film. I had some old Kodak Max 400 that I shot which came out great, and some Fuji Press 800, also great. On the other end I shot some Fuji 400Ha few months ago. The results were so grainy and crap that I stopped shooting color film after that, deciding digital is the only way to do color (slide processing is too spensive, and no meter == bad slides).
