Color Film Photograph on NYT cover page

A Hassy with a digital back maybe? On my screen it doesn't look sharp enough to be film.

The article associated with the photograph is about an architectural photographer's health issues. I would assume the photograph is a self portrait.

[EDIT] - never mind, I see the image is credited to
Josh Haner/The New York Times.

It's obviously an image taken on film with a 500-series Hasselblad. I don't know why anyone would think otherwise. Yes, I know that sometimes cheesy magazines will use a fake film frame but I've yet to see someone use a Hasselblad frame let alone without the orange film markings on the edge.

Besides, there are still plenty of editorial photographers using film.

I don't believe the NYT editorial guidelines would allow the use of a digital frame. If you read the paper every day, you realize that they publish quite a few film images, especially those commissioned in relatively out of the way locales. I'm sure it is not that these photographers don't have a digital camera -- it is that they are trying to avoid the "everything looks the same" problem that plagues digital photography, especially editorial photography.

Yep. Definitely a straight up 6x6 blad shot. But shhh many people here these days don't want to lend credence to that last part. 🙂

...“Imagine you’re the C.E.O. of Zimmer,” he said. “Why charge $1,000 for the implant in the U.S. when you can charge $14,000? How would you answer to your shareholders?”
And there we have it. 😎

As others have noted, the image was made with a Hasselblad 500 series 6x6 camera, provided the border was not a digital manipulation.

If you check out this NY Times blog, you'll see an interesting fusion of 4x5 colour film images merged with imbedded with web animation.

They seem to be doing this as a common design theme for their "First Crush" series.

In general, I've noticed the NY Times still chooses quite a few film images for their stories. Bill Cunningham's column immediately comes to mind.

Here's the link to the 4x5 images:

NYT, New Yorker, Vogue all still use film on a regular basis.

A collegue of mine shot a cover on film a few months back. Not sure if it was released yet.

It is still very normal to shoot people/beauty with film. The digital capture has a very nasty habit of showing veins, even beneath makeup. hassy CFV digital don`t show those notches, so it is the standard A12 cassette.
