is canon 9000 worth 350$ going price for bnib on ebay? i've read some reviews on amazon where people state that in 3 month the printer goes to crap and you can see poor quality prints.

can anyone suggest a good printer that will print up to 13x19, would be fairly cheap in terms of ink upkeep and would produce very nice quality prints? and be <500$?

i have this printer. its prints on regular quality are amazing. very very colourfull. i agree if b&w go to the 9500. the 9000 does a fine job but is excessively slow compared to the 9500 in b&w. i could not ask for more detail and colour. ive had mine ~8 months

I have the predecessor model (I 9900) and like above, it has excellent quality, is the fastest 13x19 printer I have seen and very reliable. I use glossy only. I have one at work and so bought one for home and they are very tough and fool proof. It's easy to come up with good profiles for them too. So I assume the 9000/9005 are similar.

The new inks in the 9000 and 9500 are suppose to be longer lived, let us know your how it works out for you if you purchase one.

thanks for the comments. i have no interest in b&w work, so i guess no need to step up to 9500. although, i do like matte finishes, so that's something i'll consider.

good to hear positive feedback in general, and when i do get a printer it'll most likely be 9000 or 9500 from canon. looking on ebay there's a factory refurb 9500 going for 448$, not a bad deal.

can't wait for christmas time 😉

There is a post/thread on the LargeFormatPhotography forum that got into the advisability of refurb printers.. both pro and con.

This link is NOT a suggestion for the printer you should buy. I am only posting this relative to pros and cons of buying refurb on articles that have moving parts that require close registry. You might find this interesting, considering the minor amount you save on refurbs in the $500 budget arena:

My personal choice is to spend the extra to stay away from someone else's headaches. I do realize however that the larger amount of refurbs are due to customers simply being disappointed or not willing to learn to use the item properly. I am more concerned about how far the Printer or Scanner has been dis- and re-assembled by a single technician.

Hmm. Well, I've had mine since 2003, and it's still working flawlessly.

Poor quality prints can only be the fault of the user: poor maintenance, poor driver setup, poor (or nonexistent) color profiling, poor paper settings, poor understanding of ICM modes, and using any ink that is not genuine Canon ink. Some people (the "Who Cares!" people) don't...emm... care, and in their infinite wisdom drop the ball at some point in the whole chain of things that have to be observed when trying to make good prints.

My images come out great, and using Ilford Galerie paper (the paper I use 95% of the time with my Canon 9000) none have ever faded or color-shifted.

I also paid $400 for it new, down from $700, I think; they were trying to get rid of that model to make room for the newer one (at that time).
