We lived for years near the ocean in South Florida without AC, so that would make sense.

I've spent some time in the Keys. Everything grew mold and mildew. My leather shoes wound up looking like Chia Pets, and I don't want to talk about what it did to my cameras! Now that I live in NM, where 30% humidity is considered "muggy", I and my cameras and my film archives are much happier!

FWIW, the book by H. Wilhelm, The Permanence And Care Of Color Photographs, helped me to understand the issues involved.

My slides from 1980, Kodachrome 25 and Ektachromes, have kept well. Color negatives have faded a lot more.

Of course B&W (silver based) is a different story. I have B&W negatives from 1913, taken by a long deceased family friend, that are still viable although the gelatin is deteriorating. 50 years old 35mm B&W negatives look like they were developed yesterday.
