Found this page this morning and it's been extremely useful to work with some slides and come up with a decent final image, just thought somebody could find it useful.

I am taking a class and we were just talking about this, and about using two Levels adjustment layers to create duplicate images, one for the highlights and one for the shadows, then using the paint brush tool to burn in the high lights on the lighter layer.
