It appears they are in a very difficult position. I agree that is it more art than anything else, but there certainly are some who post/share more of it than most people.
When the minority runs the majority, you are sure to have issues.

This is a sad reminder of how the internet has become more and more like broadcast TV in terms of content. The channel (website) is set up to generate advertising $$$ and the advertisers procede to censor the website content because some small-minded group threatens the advertisers with boycotts or lawsuits.

I read a piece by a fairly well known photo site writer and camera reviewer that said, he was told, that if he didn't give a particular camera anything but a spectacular review, there would be trouble. Rather than risk "trouble", he didn't review the camera. I wonder how much of this stuff goes on? This fellow specializes in M 4/3 gear (hint).

Americans (of which I'm one) are among the most prudish people on the globe. Yet, America is the greatest consumer of pornography and illicit drugs. Go figure. I have some hypotheses, but a topic for another forum another time.
I don't often view the NSFW photos, but mostly because I gravitate toward a different style. Yet, I am not at all offended by nudity -- the European in me I suppose -- but rather the other forms of offending "speech" that should be equally protected in a free society.
Someone suggested a photo of a teenager with a full automatic machine gun as offensive....well, as context its equally offending to me as some more graphic nearly pornographic photos, but I'm quite willing to live with both. Ask me why?
And don't kid yourselves. Our children find the porn just fine without this censorship. My son found it in middle school (ya know, around age 11 -- makes sense no?). He and his friends surfed the school computers and found plenty to look at. And those computers have "family friendly" blocking software installed.
I think my family is an anomaly in the U.S. We have frank discussions about free speech issues -- again, it seems like we're more Swedish than American. My son is now a successful, well-adjusted, and competent member of our world society. I couldn't be prouder.
I wish FM the best. I value the site just as I value RFF, and sympathize with the owners of both. Both are real "stand up" guys that we should support fully.

Their advertisers on the site have demanded this which gives them few options I guess. Pathetic none the less but more a reflection of the ridiculous society we exist in than any reflection on FM.
There was a real sh!tfight here in OZ a while ago when FB took down some historically significant pics of two topless Aboriginal women on a page that was dedicated to indigenous issues and news etc.

Artistic nudes are boring to me... one of my least favorite types of photography. I never go to a photography website because I want to see someone naked. I never cared that those types of photos were there either though as they are generally very tame and cliched.
That said, I'm sure the sites sponsors found something truly offensive a few times and just decided they couldn't be associated with it. It happens. In the business world, people don't get to exercise their right to free speech anymore.

A lot of people want control of the web. I hope all the big server farms end up in Iceland, where they seem to protect journalists and free speech better than in the US and other countries.
If you're visiting a site with rules, set buy an owner (business), it's the owner's prerogative to do as he pleases. You're a guest in his business/home.
Beyond that, there are many governments and corporations who would like to control what is said on the web. If your political view, dislike for a product, want for information on a forbidden area goes against the grain..

i look at everything though i am getting tired of images of flowers with bees on them.
i like 'art' nudes because of the lighting (true!) usually. i find a nude body in shadows interesting to look at.
if i want porn, i understand there is plenty of it out there for free...

Americans are an odd lot. Death, destruction, mayhem- all part of our normal entertainment cycle. But bring up sex, or nude photos and we go into a tizzy.
But hey, it's his site. If he wants to bow to the pressure, then he must live with the consequences, however they may fall.
We are humans and there is no doubt in my mind that we will find a way to screw up this great communication vehicle that we have, known as the internet.
It is only a matter of time....
