Actually I made a comparison between 2 Nikon lenses (a 35 and an 85) as I had my Kiev with me I tried that also. I used the same aperture time combination for the pics. The J-9 seems a tad sharper than the Nikon 85.....But in everyones life some rain must fall: I enlrged the uuper rim of the J-) pic and you can clearly see that something with the shutter us not OK.....Anybody here has an idea for remedy?

Regards

Thanks Noel that was fast...Well seems that the second shutter curtain is to fast so that there is a dark stripe on the upper part of the picture it's what Javier calls "banding". Additionally a part of the curtain seems to be lower so that it's not parallel to the first curtain anymore

If it is the upper part of the picture the image will be at the bottom of the frame and the dark line is a curtain finishing its run artifice, if it is less than 1mm I'd try living with it

To address it you need to be brave and have a set of watchmakers screw drivers, see site

http://www3.telus.net/public/rpnchbck/shutter winding mechanism.html

There may be an obstruction, either a shard of film or the synch switch sometimes fouls the shutter, set the shutter to B & try a dentist mirror to see if you can see any problem, otherwise you need a deep tray to dismantle in/over and a free weekend.

Noel

P.S. The synch switch is at the left side as you look from the back of the camera.

Actually, "banding" is sort of a digital term. I think the correct term for the Contax shutter is "tapering."

But it's the same thing.

I think that you'll find that the performance of both lenses will be similar, as they both are based on the Carl Zeiss design for the 85mm Sonnar. And in truth, the Soviet lens is a Sonnar.

Keep in mind on thing that lens testing does not often address, the wild swings in quality between lenses. You have a good J-9, perhaps a great one. I have not heard or experienced as many problems with Nikkors as I have with the J-9 in the LTM world. Is there as much swing in quality in the Contax as we do both find in the LTM world?

The problem i.e. diference between the FSU lenses and Nikons is that Nikon used black paint internally like they were likelike Ju dolls and the soviets did not bother. In real life flare conditions the FSU lenses have interesting flare tendencys, the Nikons hold up real well.

Is that only occurence, or do you have it on other shots? Could be a shadow from the window frame 🙂

Thanks....don't feed irrational hopes!😉 ´

I'll post separately about my desperate and sometimes rewarding relationship with my Kiev

Best regards
