Alright, so what I'm getting from this is that there are some minor problems, but the lens should work just fine for daily use. I'm not into hyper-precision with my film work, so it sounds as though I won't have too many issues. Thanks for all the help, guys!
Brian, dammit, now I'm craving Chicken Satay...and it's 10am.
I have a J-12 which works fine at all distances and apertures as-is on my M3 and M2; and a J-3 from someone (and I apologise for forgetting who that was) on RFF that had been adjusted before I bought it, which now also works perfectly well on my Leicas.
I also have an I-61L/D that seems to work OK, but the ergonomics of this lens are so bad that I never use it.
Shooting at F2.8, the FSU 50mm lenses should be fine. At F2 and F1.5, most J-3's and J-8's do better when ~0.1mm is added to the Shim. This is the difference in focus throw between a lens made to the Zeiss 52.4mm standard (FSU lenses) and a lens made to the Leica 51.6mm standard.
Is it worth correcting the error?
It's not hard to do, and you can use aluminum foil or paper for a shim.
J-3 & J8's are easy to shim. Here is my J-3 wide open at 1.5 in late evening on my Bessa R. Brian told me the shim I needed & this is my favorite 50mm lens.
