Canon III is using the semi-universal thread instead of the Universal thread in IIIA.
Is the Canon III incompatible with Canon later LTM lens like the 50mm 1.4 or 35mm 2, and other LTM lens ?
How can I tell if a III/IIIA hybrid is using which mount ?

Thank you.🙄

I believe that all of the Canon LTM lenses were made in "universal thread." It was the camera mounts that were made in both semi-universal thread and universal thread. So, I'm pretty sure that all Canon LTM lenses will fit on your III.

As for how to tell apart the mounts, I'm not sure. Maybe somebody else will see this and jump in.

I could mount my J-12 lens and also my Nikkor 3.5cm f2.5 lens with no problem on my Canon III.

The Canon camera museum page describes the SII as having "Non-universal and universal flanges (Leica mount) available".
The pages for the III and IIIA from the same site are described as having a "Universal threaded mount". YMMV.

The last paragraph of this Pacificrimcamera page suggests that LTM lenses will still fit the semi universal mount.

And in the real world, I either have a III or IIIA. The seller referred to it as a IIIA. The serial number (55xxx) falls into the range for the III along with the knob diamond pattern description. I got the camera with the 1950~1951 50/1.9 collapsible serenar attached. This lens was supposedly for the III. However the camera has the viewfinder magnification single selector lever of the IIIA.
FWIW various Voigtlander Cosina LTM, 1950s Leica LTM, Russian LTM, Konica Hexanon L LTM and Kobalux LTM lenses fit the camera without problems.

Dechert's Canon rangefinder book mentions that there as a lot of mixing-and-matching when it came to the III-A. This was when Canon was constantly updating their cameras and the III-A seems to be where old parts and new parts were mixed together randomly. So take your pick as to what combination you have.

He also mentions that both the III and III-A came with universal and semi-universal lens mounts. A you mention, the Canon Museum website says otherwise.
