Compur Shutter Dis-assembly

Hi everyone,

I have stripped the Compur shutter of its rangefinder components, lenses but I'm stuck on how to remove the front cover plate that sits flush with the shutter speed selector. The shutter runs slow on the slower speeds. So while everything is stripped I may as well flush and lub the shutter to see if that improves things.

There is a very small two pronged rotating plate but that seems to lock the central lens barrel. Can someone give me a pointer to go a bit further.

They normally have a central retaining ring for the front that uses a very small locking screw to keep it in place. Removing this enables the speed cam and setting ring to be removed, exposing the front of the mechanism.

If it is just the slow speeds that are slow and the shutter otherwise runs OK, you are probably better off simply offering a drop of lighter fluid to the pallet on the speed escapement and exercising it before you do too much else. Repeat once or twice after much exercising of the slow speeds if required. If you "flush" the shutter with naptha you're going to spread a lot of lube through the shutter, aperture blades, shutter blades etc and will make things that much harder for yourself.

Compur shutters were very well made. They certainly do suffer from sticking slow speeds or self timers but this is very much a result of old lubricants than the mechanism. If the shutter blades are clean you're much better off concentrating on getting the escapement running sweetly and leaving it at that because the rest of the mechanism is likely to run well for years as it is, providing it's been subject to normal use and storage conditions.

Thanks everyone. I won' t flush anything (thanks Brett). Appreciate the exploded diagram as its the lock nut to be removed and go from there then to remove the fascia plate.

You need to store your pics someplace (RFF, Flickr) and be able to find out the URL for whatever pic you want (easy to do, varies depending on the computer you're using). When you want to attach a picture to a post, find the little multi-colored "scenic" icon, hit that icon, and a box will pop up where you enter the picture URL. That's all there is to it.
