computer update!

new computers, both very fun and very frustrating!

got some christmas money that i was not expecting and as my macbook was gasping for air i took the plunge and bought a new mac mini...fusion drive, 8 gigs ram...it's their top mini without any extras and compared to the macbook it is a flying machine!
no real problems except not remembering most of my passwords...and being obtuse when pursuing/finding them and setting up new ones.
the migration assistant didn't work for me...the apple keyboard refused to be recognized and anything i ever knew about setting up email left me in the night, never to return...apple info on email did not work but realized that maybe my cable/internet provider might have some useful info...and they did! the apple help line was useful despite his insistence that he could not come over and do it for me!!
just bought pse 13 and loaded it...loaded pse 8 also...so simple to use i keep it around for comfort's sake...
i went with a 28 inch monitor from view sonic and it's overwhelming in size! i plan to buy a spyder calibration tool and see if there is much of a difference between factory and calibrated screens...will also calibrate my old screen, that tiny 24 incher and maybe sell it locally.

and that folks is my new computer christmas saga in brief!

Congrats on your new Mini, Joe, and that big monitor should be great as you get things sorted out.

I too just got a new Mac, but a month early for Christmas, changing from a 2009 iMac 27" to a Retina iMac 27". There are still some email oddities to deal with here as well.

Apple forums can provide some relief and great info. No need to join if you don't wish to. Just enter a question and search the archive.
You should find many answers there when setting up.

How old is your old MacBook? If it happens to be in the PPC era, the default migration software won't do much good. The one really bad break between support of Apple products...just like when Canon killed off FD.

Even if this is the case, there are probably third party apps that can ease the process. Mail clients look quite different on the latest 2-3 iterations of the Mac OS, so it's probably not your fault for feeling lost. I use Outlook on Macs for inner peace.

Anyways, congratulations on the purchase. I can wholeheartedly recommend the magic trackpad plus gesture software for most needs include light editing and web browsing. The OS X interface cries to be use with a big trackpad 😀

Actually, I for one am so sick of computers that I would rather not contemplate acquiring new ones.

I have a Mac Pro that is my workhorse: 6 X 3.33GHZ and 48 Gbytes of RAM running 10.6.8 using PCIe system memory. So yes, it flies. No single new software will run on this machine without me having to update everything though...

What everybody seems to forget is that these things need to be configured and maintained as tools. The constant slew of updates make this very difficult. If I need to change one single thing, it will hurt.

Not trying to be down on your particular purchase, I'm sure it's a slick machine too. I'm just saying that the effort to maintain these things is reaching the point of diminishing returns.

Herein lies the advnatage with film, it is not coupled to an OS release! 🙂 I am even going to go back and fill out the tax return for 2014 manually because "turbo tax is not supporting 10.6" anymore...

it all been running smoothly today...no quirks popping up at all...except for a certificate thing on one of my email addresses...not sure what it all means.
copied my contact book from the old computer and popped it into the new one like i was a pro!
