Confession - I gave in to GAS

Good suggestion - thanks. I'll give that a try - first I'll have to source a long leather strap. The interim solution is some 6mm climbing rope with the core removed, leaving just the braid. Not as comfy as a strap with a pad, but strong!

Chris, congrats on the M5, now I know why I didn`t go last sunday,it would have been very expensive. Before you send your M5 for repair, give Peter @ Photographic & Instrument Repair in Rockdale a call (02)95672893. He has just CLA my M3 &DR 50mm `cron, & done an excellent job. He is ex Wild Leitz and Maxwell`s, so He knows a thing or three, also has the odd bits & pieces lying about, anyway best of luck with the M5.

Chris, just a suggestion from a 2-lug M5 fan [and I've had both]. Before you do the automatic thing and get a 3rd lug, try the camera out with the vertical one side strap arrangement. Although the 3 lug design does give you both options, and for some folks the horizontal just seems more natural, I find the original design 'bare to the hand' shutter release side a plus. Its an uncluttered hold and no strap in the way. I use a long leather strap and carry the camera at the right side low with the strap across my back/chest which takes the weight off, is very comfortable, and stops it from falling forwards if you bend over. Its very easy to bring it up for an exposure this way, and still have some tension on the strap for a steady hold. Also if you get a continuous strap that goes through both lugs [and across the battery compartment] you can arrange the camera better, keep the pad on your shoulder but move the camera on the strap if you want to the front, or even on your back to get it out of the way.

Very cool camera, you will love it.

Wearing it at the side, do you have the lens facing your body, or away from your body?

Chris,
My camera is off at this time for a CLA, but I have this photograph with my camera on my wife to give you an idea. I would wear it on the other side - lens is out like this, and with the bottom facing forward which protects the top plate (seems that's the way things go knock into it if they do) - and it rides a bit higher up for me just above my hip. Note the continuous strap through the lugs, bought it in Japan about 5 years ago, but they may still be around. If you are interested I'll look for you.

Thanks. :) I'm on the track of a local fellow who can make me a strap in good quality leather - I'll see how I go with that, and if it falls through I'll ask you to have a look for me.

Hi, I'm Bill, I too have GAS........

Chris, congrats on the M5, she look grand. After reading the thread a bit ago I loo looked at the M5, but with GAS pains for a F2 DP-12 and 180 2.8 ED IF AF I have to put it on hold.

Please let us know how you make out.

Congrats, Chris.

GAS-X ==> credit card report :)

I sold my M5 many years ago, and now I regret doing so. One day, I will get either an M5 or M6 with accurate meter.

I need to take a look at many more similar photos to better understand how the strap works.:)

dreamsandart, very elegant illustration! Congrats, Chris! I'm another who prefers straps attached to one side or the other of the camera. And the side it attaches to determines which shoulder I carry it on... lens outward, camera top forward. If the strap is on the left side of the camera, then I carry it on the left shoulder, as then the left hand finds a good grasp right away and reaction to the picture opportunity is swift. Have fun! :)
