I reached a male in Kodak's film and film chemicals division this morning and asked him if Kodak has truly stopped making Microdol-X. He put me on hold, checked their records, came back on the phone, and confirmed that it has been discontinued. Sad! I'll have to switch to Ilford's Perceptol which Anchell and Troop, in their Film Developing Cookbook, state "Ilford Perceptol is formulated to be used at the same dilutions and times as Microdol-X. It has some working properties in common with Microdol-X, is marketed as an equivalent, and appears to be chemically close to Microdol."

There are some alternatives available for several of the popular developers, as you state. One thing about B&W developers is, so long as there are places like Photographer's Formularly, most are simple enough to mix from basic materials.
