I went to purchase some Rodinal online from Vanbar in Melbourne and I was given two choices: R09 One shot OR Adox Adonal Rodinal. What gives?

Do they both rely on the same data/developing times as the old Rodinal?

There is a fair amount of conjecture on this topic on the internet and it is difficult to get a definitive answer.

Thanks in advance!

"Old" Old ("Original") vs. whatever comes later

"Old" Old ("Original") vs. whatever comes later

I use both the "Old, Original-formula" version of "Rodinal", marketed as "Fomadon RO9" by FOMA (Czech Republic) and the "new, improved" (="modern") version of Rodinal, marketed as "Rodinal" by Agfa - several years ago when I stocked up at Freestyl.

The "Old" (RO9) uses the original patent-expired formula. The "new" stuff marketed as Rodinal=Adonal uses "updated" chemistry more suited to the "modern" (thin layer?) emulsions.

The tip-off, as I see it, is the recommended diltions: the "old" chemistry is 1+40, the "new" chemistry is 1+50. They both work, but I prefer "RO9" at 1+40 for "old" films like Efke KB25, etc and the Rodinal (modern) at 1+50 for Plus-X, etc. Mythology: "RO9" supposedly stands for "Rodinal Original 9", though "RO" may mean somthing different in non-English.

I will say the RO9 looks like iodinated cough syrup - has that develop-or-die look to it. Along with D76 it's my other "old school" chemistry.

I think it is not RO9 but R 09 and is supposed to be nominal name for original Calbe formula. For years I was using R 09 made by ORWO (ORiginal WOlfen) and the concentrations given were 1:25, 1:50, 1:100 and also 1:200 (time for ISO 50 51 min. at 20C). And looks like the "updates" had only an economy reason: to lower the cost of production and shorten the famous Rodinal durability. Today in Canada one can buy a Rodinal replacement: Blazinal - producer unknown.
