We have just watched president Obama sign the Health Care Reform Bill on TV over here in Europe. A significant and historical event with far reaching implications. And a touching ceremony. It's not a perfect bill, but it is on the right track.

Congratulations to all Americans here!
 
Change happens over here at a painfully slow pace, but if it's right, it does happen. Now if we can just put back some of the rules we had for years (e.g. Glass Steagall Act)......

Indeed, I only realised the state of medical care in the US a couple of years ago - it's quite shocking.
 
I agree with Olsen but perhaps he should have said 'Congratulations to all Democrats'...

Robin's right, of course. But it's hard to see how this particular genie can be put back in the bottle, given that every other developed nation has already taken this step in one form or another, usually some decades ago, and none has yet repealed a national health care system.

I think what he meant was 'congratulations to all those uninsured people who will now get healthcare' not 'congratulations for the political victory'.
 
The so called health care bill was not about health care reform.

I'm happy though. I plan on quitting work in two years and living on the government plan.
 
Perhaps he meant Congratulations to 'the minority of Americans whom wanted this mess, even at the cost of the democratic process' Or, perhaps it's, 'Congratulations to the many Democrats whom abandoned all claims of honesty and ethics when they ignored the people whom sent them to Congress as they worked so tirelessly to undermine the majority of Americans by secretly writing bills, back-room deals to buy votes with Party and Taxpayers monies as well as tacking on whatever trash that popped into their heads with the victory party theme, PORK, PORK, PORK!'

Of course it might be, 'Congratulations to America for becoming more like Europa and subjugating every American to a law that punishes them if they do not want to buy into a system they never wanted in the first place!' Whatever it means, one wonders what the political landscape will look like come Novembers' post-election days?

Or even, "Congratulations to those Americans who accept a democratic vote" (small 'd').

Just because you don't like what a democracy does sometimes, it doesn't mean it wasn't democratic.

When Maggie Thatcher first got in, a popular badge was DON'T BLAME ME - I VOTED LABOUR. Perhaps you should consider something similar.

Or that we are no longer encouraged to save money for unexpected needs? Or that doctor's fees have been allowed to go sky high, and partly due to legal requirements rather than a doctor's good judgement of what was needed?

I served almost 30 years in our military, with constant promises that I and my wife would have medical care for life. Then it was cut out, as well, it was only a benefit not a law. A lot of complaints later; OK you guys, here is what we will do, you can get back in, but you have to pay. So I then acquired medical care first by keeping aside savings, then by purchasing a medical plan, as I couldn't get in after all, unless I was willing to go to civilian doctors and hospitals.

If I am not quick to trust a congress that does that, and in this case, most everything has been moved forward far enough and staggered enough that they hope people won't notice the drain on their wallet, or blame the current politicians for it.

And all this hoopla for 1/6 of the populations?

Now before this starts a flame war, I am talking only about myself and my experience. I am not saying any of the above is anybody else's experience, nor is anybody required to agree or disagree since it is about me. Besides, it is difficult to compare health care from one country or culture to another.

And Olsen, thanks for thinking of us no matter. That was kind of you.

I hope everybody who comments, doesn't say anything that sounds like a condemnation of anybody else's system. It works for them, and who knows, when it all get hashed out, this one may work for us. I just doubt it. Again, that's only me, so if you disagree, do it with me please.

I've spent some time in the US and I really feel that most of the time you act honestly (more than we do in Italy at least..) I'm pretty sure this will be something that you'll be happy with.

Bob Heinleins wars were against the 'Bugs' and the' Skinnies' NOT other human beings.
Odd that the movie of 'Troopers' ( A complete dissapointment without the Powered Armour )depicted a lot NAZI philosophy and of course Nazi uniforms and I'm not sure he being Jewish would have concurred with that
or that anybody else would either !
