Not sure whether a film vs. digital forum is the right place for this, because it's not a which one's better than the other thing..
I just ran into a (Dutch language) article discussing contact sheets. It was based around a book by Kristen Lubben about Magnum contact sheets..

In short, it discusses what contact sheets can show beyond that one image that got selected for printing. Touches on how images on digital media tend to get erased when they don't make it through the editing process. And in the end breaks a lance for holding on to those second tiers, as their importance may only become obvious years after the images were shot.

The book "On Being a Photographer" by David Hurn and Bill Jay has a whole chapter on "Creating Contacts" where they talk of not just the benefits, but the essential part contact sheets play in the creative photographic process. Highly recommended.
