Contax G2 defective? No info displayed by screen or viewfinder

I just bought a used Contax G2 through Ebay. When I turn on the camera, the red light lights up, but nothing happens -- the screen and the viewfinder remain dead, and neither shutter release nor focus button does anything. I don't have any film loaded on the camera.

I am still waiting for a charger and a new set of batteries to come, but for now I'm anxious to find out whether the above is consistent with a G2 out of battery, or rather suggests a defective item. If the latter then I will have to get in touch with the seller asap.

I'm new to the G series and thank you very much for your help.

Dumb question but what red light are you talking about? I can't think of one on the camera.

I think the only red light that goes on, on the G2 is the timer red light on the front. When you turn the power on, is there a "red light" that you are referring to (btw that "red light" is just a painted red dot that gets exposed when you turn it on).

Hi guys, I think that solves my problem: what I was referring to is indeed only a painted red dot, not a red light. I tested the camera in the daytime when it was hard to tell. So it's not like the battery is feeding a light but not powering the rest. Hopefully the problem is just a drained battery. Sorry for being a total noob there. Thank you for your help!

I hope a fresh battery does the trick. You'll love it when you get it fired up and a few rolls under your belt.
