hey there:

i was wondering if someone in SF would be willing, during early afternoons, help me to learn how to properly use my contax G2 camera. i have used it, and love the results when good, but i feel like i am not using it properly. would be willing to compensate someone but would really like to find an enthusiast willing to help!!!

feel free to email me at harryxgoldberg@gmail.com

looking forward!

Harry,

Just sent you an email saying basically this same thing. I am one of the guys you talked to in the foyer of the SFMOMA last weekend.

I haven't used the G2 specifically, but these cameras aren't rocket science and while each has their quirks and idiosyncrasies they are generally logically constructed, so I'd be more than happy to meet up for a beer, talk through the instructions/controls, and go out shooting together.

Is there anything in particular about the camera that is frustrating you? Do you have a sense of what conditions produce good results and not-so-good results? Or is it just a vague sense that you aren't sure what the camera is capable of and how to get there?

Larry- That is a great URL and summarizes proper focusing with the G2.

Harry- I would say the only funky thing about the camera, really, is the flash compensation. The G2 has a more rudimentary flash circuit than the RX/AX/N1/Aria. It is a bit bizarre to apply flash comp.

Being as I almost never do this on my G2 it has no real impact on me.

The key to using the camera is using that rear focus button and instinctively looking at the distance gauge in the viewfinder to see if it makes sense before hitting the shutter. Once you're used to it, no big deal :)

Harry,
I just got a G2 a few weeks ago and have, like you, learning its eccentricities. If you're interested, I'd be happy to meet sometime in the city to share discoveries. I live in Oakland.
Regards,
Jamie

Jamie,

Are you enjoying the camera thus far? Try the 90mm for portraits if you have one, very under-rated.

thanks for all of the responses. it all has been really informative and encouraging. i have used the camera for some time, with some good results as well as some bad. i suppose i just want(ed) to ensure i am using it properly. i actually met a few guys form this forum randomly one afternoon in sf, and one of them gave me some intstruction this afternoon. how great that this community exists.

i am sure to have more questions to follow.

thanks again...

harry
