There IS a basic focus confirmation on the camera in the form of a small display on the upper right, a short line which goes from closest focusing distance to infinity. A gap in the line indicates the distance at which you're focused. It will tell you pretty reliably whether you're focusing on the hedge six feet behind the person you're trying to photograph.

Thank you for that. I suspect I've just missed it. As (I think) I said, I'm still relatively new to the AF on both the Hexar RF and Contax G, so don't know all the wrinkles. Because of that I'm still in "not sure" territory. This may well help me a lot. Because when focus is right, I do like the photos I've taken with the Hexar AF - and it allows me to take them in circumstances where another camera may not.

I've learned to trust the AF on my G2 - it has a basic distance readout in the vf as a confidence check as well of course. There are lots of reports of focus problems with the G cameras but I guess this is a personal thing...only time I've had problems is when shooting into an aquarium... 🙂
Focus also works great in very low light - I've shot in dark tunnels before now and the focus snaps on nicely...

I've never used the Hexar - and it may be superior in many ways - but don't be put off by autofocus on the G cameras...

I'm not. But I suspect that even when I'm more familiar with focus on the G2 and Hexar AF I'll still worry. Not in general (I don't miss focus that often) but still think that for shots that have to be right I might still feel concerned (rightly or not).

Not really my personal issue, though. I seldom if ever use those cameras for anything like "must get" shots. For me, personally, I have a great fondness for my G2 system as a general-purpose film camera, and especially like its precision focus with the 45mm Planar (a lens I love). The 28 and 90 are nice as well, and I find that all fit in a small pouch, which is very easy to travel with. I've also come to really appreciate the Hexar AF, but find I use it as a more "special purpose" camera for low light and low "noticibility". I've shot multiple rolls of film with the Hexar AF in circumstances where people I've sent prints to didn't even know I was taking photographs!

There's is a good conformation in the viewfinder of the g2 and on the top of the camera. I often use mf on my G2 with the 90 mm. In that way you get a very good conformation were the point of focus is by pointing severel different object in the scene and then chekking the bar graph in the viefinder
