hello contax lovers,
just replaced my broken shutter ribbons for my trustee contax II which has given me no grief for the many years i've had it. when the ribbon broke the shutter will not fully cock....only half the clockwise winding. this problem continued even with the new ribbons. any ideas? are my ribbons too short, or is the problem more than meets the eye?? i followed rick oleson's instructions to the dot...
thanks
p.s.i must give thanks to rick oleson, mike elek, and the kiev survival sites for their informative sites.

What do the blinds do as you rewind?

the blinds move upward just shy of the locking mechanism. shutter fires but without much conviction. i'm going to send the camera to a repairman in pennsylvania (camera care) who will sort out the shutter for me. i have a feeling i've made the ribbons too short. any ideas?

It is not at all obvious but all the cogs and wheels need to be correctly positioned and you may have disturbed this when the ribbon snapped or when you replaced. It confuses me just looking at the wheels firing.
Simplisitically when you select /1250 (or /1000) and then wind on - the blinds should just reach the stopping position, be disengaged by the 'ramp', and the 2nd blind should be dragged through the clutches by 1/8" or so, before stopping.
So you need to try 1/1000 (gently) and probably re-read your maintenance instuctions on how to reset the cogs, if you dont get the narrow separation.
If you really had (have) the ribbons too short then you would have problems at the slower speeds, when the 2nd blind is (needs to be) dragged back a full frame, and the escapments are employed.

noel,
i think you're right about the cogs and wheels being dislodged when the ribbons snapped because i can't even get the blinds to the stopping position on 1/1250. i'll have to admit defeat and send the camera in for repairs. thanks for your input. til then i'll have to use my kiev 4a which has served me faithfully far longer than this contax II.
cheers,
luis

I've avoided disturbing my shutters to avoid the aggro of resetting them but if you have done the ribbons it should not be as difficult.
I'll try and find a post or look at one of my trays of bits, as it would save you postage insurance etc. and provide progress to your wish fulfilment.
Ashes soon - may divert me, looks like we are going to lose this time?

Looks like you get to sing land of hope and glory this year...
The big wheel that drives the top shutter roller needs to be set back tooth by tooth until the shutter can be wound to the top of the frame and the gap at 1250 is the correct gap.
Easy no, but possible...

recently got the damage report from the steve s (my contax repairman). although my ribbon replacement and length was correct, my shutter/winding mechanism had to be reset...just as noel predicted. modest price for an overhaul of the shutter mechanism and great communication by "camera_care". they also do contax IIa/IIIa.

if my second contax body share the same fate, i will attempt to do this myself.

It is painful when my predictions are too correct, Cassendra had same problem, looks like the ex-cons going to white wash the team this year?
