Burnt Leica M4 and lens. Not working. I don’t know why anyone would pay £1488 unless they had too much money and just had to buy something rather than leave the auction with nothing. But I have to wonder why this would even be in an auction.

Not just £1488 - there's a huge buyer's premium and VAT import/sales tax. After all that, surely you could just buy a M4 with Summicron and burn it yourself.

But could you burn it as well? This one was in a house fire. If I bought an M4 kit and burnt it outside in a pit, I’m not sure it would be as thoroughly cooked inside and out and at the right temperature.
Thinking about it... The auction site says it’s been grilled, but I don’t see evidence of that. Maybe it was merely baked.

And it wasn’t even on the Hindenburg https://www.artphotoacademy.com/hindenburg-leica/ or set alight by Kyle Cassidy http://www.kylecassidy.com/lj/2011/hindenburg-leica.jpg (to be fair Kyle didn’t burn that Leica, it was recovered from a house fire, but still…).

The exact term in the auction was "chargrilled". Must be a special, proprietary process that adds collector value, somewhat like an urushi lacquer finish. The only thing that was burned in the process was the money in the buyer's pocket.

Maybe it was a special on "Diners, Drive ins and Dives".
I’m sure it’s a museum piece... and obviously purchased for a reason other than stupidity. I’m not offended by it.

or...just a way to move money from one person to another using an auction as the intermediary?

Hard to put a price on this kind of authenticity.

Thanks for the link. I wonder if they have site for NA sales. Sweet, rich buyers. I want to be close to those.
