Any of you guys have any luck finding someone to repair a coolscan 8000? Transport on mine is acting up and I cant seem to get it to work. Very frustrating.
next step, whats a decent step down from this for 35mm? A 4000?

You can try to fix it by yourself, or send it to Nikon. Last time my 8000ed stopped working, I sent it to Nikon. Total cost was about $600 flat rate.
For 35mm, you have multiple choices: 5000ed, 4000ed, and ved.

Depends where you are. Nikon UK won't touch it, but Nikon Germany will still try to repair.

Im in the US.
Im very much a tech but cant figure out the best way to approach the mechanics of the transport. Screwed around with it for two hours yesterday and got nowhere with it.

ok, finally got this apart, lubed the rails and it is back to working again. New problem Im having now is that the left side of each scanned frame is completely distorted. Unit went from not functioning at all to scanning, so hopefully Im on my way with this. Did some googling cant seem to turn up anything conclusive. Anyone have any thoughts? Behaves like this regardless of the scan software I use.
thanks!
thanks!

Can you post an image showing what these distortions look like? I have experienced wavy type distortions due to the film being able to move during a scan, although this was with 120 film in modified holders so I am not sure it would apply to your situation.
