Coolscan 8000ED, worth it?

I have the opportunity to buy a 8000 coolscan with several holders, including glazes ones.

Basically for medium format (C.41 and b&w) and very little of 135.

Currently I use a V500 which to my taste is unusable for 135. The holders of MF are also a nightmare.

It would cost me $ 800 and is in good condition with little use on their backs.

How certain are the banding problems?

$800 would be a excellent deal, if it has no flaws.

All multi-row scanners have banding problems - if you set it to "precision scan", where it uses only one row at a time (scanning at 1/3 of the speed), these will be gone.

If in good condition, that's a great price. (I think you'll find that the Coolscan 8000 is an excellent scanner for 35mm film, far better than any flatbed scanner, and inspires you to shoot more of it.)

I find the banding noticeable with medium format scans at 4000 ppi using the Coolscan 9000, but it doesn't seem to appear at all with 35mm scans. I use VueScan to drive the scanner, clicking "Fine Mode" option eliminates it completely in all cases. Just experiment and do what works best for you.

On my Coolscan 9000 with Vuescan, there is banding unless I put multi-sampling to 2. I can't remember if it did the same thing with Nikon Scan, but I suspect that it did. If you use "Fine mode", you'll only use one of the two rows of CCD sensing elements. I guess there's no harm in that, but my view is that if there are two rows, I want to use both!

BTW, $800 is a great price if the scanner is fully functional.

My 8000 ED is a great scanner; on par or better than my previous Coolscan V. I did find that my medium format film holder was worn out, so I bought a replacement and all is well. A glass holder was tempting, but out of my price range. $800 is a great price for the scanner with the stock holders; so the glass holders make this an even better deal.
