Coolscan IV ED vs Plustek?

Thanks Godfrey - I will have a proper look at Vuescan.

I see that you can download NikonScan, so I will see if I can get that working initially, just to test that the scanner works OK.

If you're running Windows 10, you can install Nikonscan fine if you set the compatibility setting to Windows XP. After that, the software will run, but the much bigger issue is that Nikon's drivers don't work with Windows 10. You won't be able to even try out the scanner without Vuescan.

umm lots of posts but, aside from Ko.Fe., no one mention personal experience with both of them. I use Plustek 8100, which I bought for aroung $200.00 and I'm pretty happy with it. For those that have used both, is it really worth the money/trouble for 35mm scanning?

I also use the Plustek 8100 and I think it's a great little unit.
A year or two ago I found a chap who services the Nikon units in the UK so I'll see if I can find a link. I think the guy was in semi retirement and basically did it for the love of it. If I find the link, it may be worth getting your unit serviced while he's still at it.
Meanwhile, here's a Plustek 8100 scan

You can also download VueScan and run it in demo mode, free of charge. Given the likelihood that NikonScan will/will not even be installable, the VueScan demo is a better bet for testing the scanner's functionality.

I got my Coolscan V ED about six or eight years ago. It was not new then. It hasn't needed any repairs at all, and it's scanned many hundreds of negatives for me. They're pretty darn robust machines if you take care of them properly.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will definitely be trialling Vuescan at the very least.

In the end I picked up the Coolscan V for a similar price of a used Plustek, so it was worth it in my mind. The sa-21 is a plus for me over the manual loading of the Plustek's.

Hopefully it won't need a service, but I have taken a risk buying blind. I'll be cleaning the mirror and giving it a look over once it arrives!

I'm so sorry, the guy I was thinking of is this guy but he is actually in the states not the UK.
For our American friends, you might like to get a service while you can

That guy, Frank Phillips outside Washington DC, is the GO-TO guy for Nikon Coolscan. He'll clean the mirror and do other repairs. Top notch.

Here's another RFF thread talking about his work. Did a great job for me.

Suggestion: If you have a Coolscan that's never been serviced, might be a good time to get it tuned up.

Well, the Coolscan V was waiting for me when I got back from Le Mans last weekend.

The scanner and the SA-21 unit looked pretty clean, but there were dents in casing.

I knew the unit had been in storage, and only tested as far as turning on and getting the green light - but it was cheap, so I was happy to take a chance.

Stripped it down, the dents in the case hadn't caused any obvious damage to the internals, motor drives were working fine.

So I cleaned the mirror (which was pretty clean) and stripped/cleaned the SA-21 - tested it out on an XP laptop with NikonScan, and it works a treat!!

Not had chance to compare it directly to my V500, but the scans at first glance were comparable to some I had had done at a Lab.

Just got to have a play with both Vuescan and NikonScan on my Win10 PC to see which I prefer. I had read that if you install Vuescan (demo) first, then you can use NikonScan on Windows 10 as long as you don't re-install the Nikon drivers.
