I'm am about to buy a dedicated 35mm film scanner and I can get a Coolscan IV in excellent condition pretty cheaply but will spring for the newer version brand new if the quality difference is significant. Anyone have any information or thoughts on the difference between the two scanners?

Thanks in advance

I have IV which presented me with 6-7 years of flawless operation (knocking the wood...), but would I consider contemporary choices I would certainly go for a brand new V. FIlm scanner is quite complex device, manuf. warranty may prove to be worth one to get, it boost enhanced specifications which may manifest itself in somewhat better dynamic range.
In particular when its current price is about a half of what that of new IV some 5-7 years back, I think it's no-brainer..

In fact, I consider upgrading mine (IV) for V in some 3-4 months or thereabouts..
