Hi,

I'm buying LS-50 off my friend, he's in doubt about posting it to me (he doesn't have original box).
Question is how to secure this scanner for transport, any suggestions?

Thanks,
Peter.

Since, unlike flatbed scanners, most film scanners neither have nor require a locking mechanism for transport, the big deal here is proper padding around the unit (bubble wrap securely wrapped, then taped, completely around the unit) inside a decent cardboard box with several "FRAGILE" stickers on it. Depending on how loosely the bubble-wrapped scanner fits in a given box, additional "loose" padding (crumpled newspapers, "peanut pack", etc.) may be needed...you don't want the thing moving around much in the box after you've sealed it. Also make sure the package is insured for an appropriate amount; I believe that with UPS, packages are automatically insured up to around a few hundred, which might cover the replacement value of the LS-50, but check it out rather than take my word for it.

Tip: if any form of "peanut pack" is used in the box, I would place the scanner in a sealable plastic bag before bubble-wrapping it, to prevent any loose particles from getting into the scanner's guts. Put a small silica gel pack in the bag to keep moisture from accumulating.

the above is good; I would add:

- double-box it. lots of bubble wrap, in a box with packing peanuts; then, pack that box in a larger box with packing peanuts. extra shipping cost due to cube size (not weight), but cuts WAY down on damage; I ship vintage hi-fi peices this way.

- avoid wadded up newspaper for all but the lightest items, it crushes once then leaves the item bouncing around loose in the box

When I moved from NYC to Milwaukee I had my Canon scanner in the backseat of the car and locked the scanner and when I used it for the first time it gave me all sorts of mechanical issues. Randomly getting stuck on occasion.

Just be careful with moving it.

Thanks a lot guys!

My friend is very precise, so he'll wrap unit it foil, when bubble wrap + celu tape, then put it thight in the box, then wrap box with papers, bubble wrap again and put it in the second box. I think that's enough.

Thanks, again.
Peter.
