Have I got this right?

A few days ago someone scanned and uploaded a page from a book onto this site, presumably(?) without permission of either author or publisher.

The book is in print and is currently sold commercially. The page was not altered in any way.

As I understand it this amounts to an infringement of copyright. Am I right?

My understanding is that if the poster had re-written the text, or turned it in some way into their own intellectual creation based on the original material it would be OK?

The book was a reference title, we all delve into these from time to time and make use of the info, after all that is what they are for, but I think there is something here we should be conscious of.

In the United States, where this site is based, it is ok to copy small parts of a book for the purposes of literary or art criticism if the copied material is used to illustrate the critical article about the copyrighted work.
