I'm having problems updating my new to me (1st version M8) M8 firmware to the latest 2.004. I've tried calling and e-mailing Leica in NJ but they must be off for Good Friday. Could someone PM me or point me to an older firmware version link so I can try that ?
THANKS
Glenn

What is the problem?
Edit: I just saw your other thread. An older firmware version will not help you. You are doing something wrong. Follow the instructions in the Leica PDF to the letter and use a normal SD card.

Glenn,

This might be a problem with your firmware downloads (regardless of version number). Your firmware downloads might have data integrity problems.

Here's a freeware utility you can use to check the data integrity of the version 2.004 firmware you've downloaded:

http://www.diamondcs.com.au/freeutilities/md5.php

I always use this utility to check my firmware downloads before installing them on my cameras .. I don't relish the thought of bricking an expensive camera because my firmware update went haywire.

Leica is very clear that you are not able to down-date your firmware version. I would make sure that you have placed the 2.04 directory at the top level of your SD card (so it is next the one that says something like Leica100, or whatever). Also, the recommendation that you download a new copy from the Leica website also sounds appropriate.
Really it should work. I have never had a problem. It is important to follow the firmware update instructions from Leica precisely.

good luck!

Hi Greg and Bluegt2, Sorry, I forgot to state on this post that the camera has firmware version 1.201 installed at this time. I'm NOT tring to backdate the firmware from 1.201, But wanted to try an eariler firmware than 2.004 to see if maybe that was the problem. Please see my other, 1st post, for further .

Oh, and Arie , Thanks for that link! I'll give it a try!

Thanks everyone,
Glenn

Hi Arie,
Tried the MD5 software on the 2.004 firmware but I don't understand the results. How do you verify the firmware with just a string of numbers/letters, posted below?

Glenn;

My understanding of the MD5 checksum algorithm is that you won't get a string of letters/numbers if there's a data integrity problem with file you are checking (others can correct me if I'm wrong).

Incidentally, your letter/number sequence (3ED0CF81B441F5C4A08393E274293333) is identical to mine so there's nothing wrong with your firmware download. If you are indeed following the firmware update procedure to the letter, I don't know what else to suggest.

One other thought, Glenn. Assuming you are copying the new firmware to your SD card on a Windows system, how are you dismounting the SD card from your internal/external card reader? Windows has a utility to "safely remove hardware"; just ejecting your SD card without using this might corrupt the firmware you've just copied.

I have firmware 1.201, 2.000 and 2.002 if you want to work your way up. You may want to re-install 1.201 again and then try a newer version. Just a thought.

Arie,
Thanks for checking the sequence . Yes on the PC I have been just ejecting the card by right clicking the reader/removable disc, so I'll try the "Safely Remove Harware" way.

Lewis44,
I have 2.002 thanks to hunghang but I'd like to try to reload 1.201 and then go to 2.00 if you don't mind. I'll PM you with my email address.
THANKS
Glenn

Just an update. I called Leica/NJ and talked to one of their technical answer people. I went thru how I was attemping to do the firmware update step by step and he couldn't find fault with my process. He asked a repair technician about it but neither of them had ever heard of this problem. The Tech thought maybe the basic software in the camera had a problem that wouldn't allow the update process.
So now I have to decide whether to send this body back to the dealer for exchange/refund, or just send the body to Leica/NJ for warranty repair. The body looks to be in mint shape and I'm not sure if the dealer has another demo in similar condition for similar $.

I'd send it back to Leica and have them do a complete check. They should be pretty quick as long as it's not an "Upgrade" part that is needed, which, based on what you describe, it isn't.

Having said that, you may want to check with the dealer first. Usually they will take care of you, especially if you have a problem right off.

Having re-read my reply to you, I guess I did'nt help much. 6 of 1, etc.

Randy,
My dilemma exactly. Ended up shipping the body back to the dealer yesterday.
Hope to have another M8 in my hands next week !
