Do I have a collection piece here?

I read this somewhere

Serial # is 2889xxx making it very early production, with the much better quality M6-type ISO dial (was changed shortly after MP production began to a cheap plastic design that is easy to bump off setting). This model is extremely rare, I'm told that less than 500 were made with the M6-style ISO and of those only about 10% were in silver

How true is this?

Here is a picture of my cameras back which I may take off of the for sale if true.

Jorge, better decide fast!!! People at RFF are looking for an MP!

There are lots of variations in cameras throughout there run. The first 2000 or so Nikon F's go for insane prices. The first 1600 Nikon F2's don't, even though they have as many features that set them apart from the rest of the producion models. Ain't no stinkin plastic wind lever tip on my F2! It's All metal.

Your MP may go "insane", but I think it is just insane to Sell it!

(and 10 people were viewing this thread all at once!!!)

Jorge... keep it, and get yourself another Leica, this time the M6TTL that makes you salivate. Load one with color and the other with B&W, carry one with a 50/2 'cron and the other with a 35mm lens and you have a portable studio.

That's what I've done.

On the other hand... the MP and the M6TTL have conflicting shutterspeed dials (the MP turns like the M6 and older Leicas; the M6TTL is like the M7's, the Alka-Seltzer size). That may be a problem...

Life is full of choices... :)

Dear Jorge:

It is no collector piece..sorry. But then again, people collect anything these days.

This is common and well known (your dial on the rear).

It may be somewhat more collectable if what you stated about the MP later film dial being easy to bump out of position were correct. This is not at all the case and this comment incorrect.

I have owned an M6, M6ttl, and now MP (only camera, used almost daily) and have never had a problem and the quality is the same as other film speed dials.

You appear to be the victim of hype or bad luck (as those who propel such rumors). It is a mass produced, hand assembled machine....and this piece is plastic.... Things happen.

just as i thought. By the way, I will keep it since its is just such a nice got my new scanner today :) I have been a little spoiled wityh the digital lately and love the practicality of it. However, there is something to be said about film and leicas.

Jorge,
I have an earlier one with the M6 type dial as well, and I think about the best youre going to see is a marginal premium if you resell. Even mint in the box, I dont think it will bring an overwhelming increase over a standard Mp in like condition. Im shootiong mine..

I have one like that too, only black. I bought it in August of the summer that they came out. It is nicer, but it cannot make that much of a difference in price...I am going to keep mine, as well as keep using it.
