Has anybody else seen some of the deals on eBay these days? I got a 90mm f4 Elmar metal hood in mint condition in box for the opening bid of $45. I also bought a D Leica ball head for $39. I slo just remembered I bought a 3g just CLAd for $599. All the opening bids. The fixed price items still reflected pre Covid pricing, but I bet they will drop as well.

Not a good time to sell though. I am sure it will come back.

Let me know if anyone else have come across deals.

People have been thrown out of work, many have lost their businesses permanently. It stands to reason that there will be some fire sale pricing out there from people being thrown into a grim financial situation which means they need to raise some money quickly just to support their families. When people must sell in a hurry, and can’t wait for the “right” buyer, prices will be lower. There’s no way around that.

And not just cameras.

Definitely noticed it. Picked up a Novoflex LEINIK practically new in the box for $25. Was definitely an interesting trick to try out for that kinda money

I think less people are willing to buy some meaningless junk during this time. Those who still wants to sell it have to motivate more.

But, in absolute terms, you still paid $45 for a simple hood....

!!! Absolutely right!

I sell on ebay, mainly odds and ends I've ended up with and normally they move very slowly using BIN.

In the last weeks and months, I've been selling anything and everything I put online! Often immediately! Old grotty filters, esoteric lens hoods, random straps, whatever! Buy buy buy!!!

I don't think the economic downturn has truly kicked in yet, at least not on ebay here. I imagine people might be sitting at home 'problem solving' using online retail?

I'm always looking at eBay for things I might want to get, but have no big need for at the moment (you should see all the items on my Watch list that have been there for months), and have found that some sellers are low on stock, but what is available is still priced at a normal level.

Getting a deal on a bid item just means no one else wanted it badly enough to outbid you, or no one was looking at it. And some folks won't deal with a seller with less than a 100% rating.

Ebay is mostly made up of brick and mortar store, or at least businesses. Their policies force most individual sellers out of their marketplace. When a lone individual does list the price is far below retail. But most buyers are scared to buy from a "person" and won't bid. Thus the low price.

I sold a substantial amount of kit last month on Ebay. Some was a bit less than I'd like but it was a fee free listing, so I just used the 10% saving to make sales and in all bar two cases made a profit on what I'd bought them for not so long ago. My two Zeiss ZM lenses sold to students who had just started doing film photography - one with an M2 and one with an M6!

What is astonishing - all the film camera dealers here have been cleaned out during lockdown. My local one sold so much online that he put his prices up (and Russell has never been cheap). New stock is a thing of the past. I have been doing camera reviews for him, and one for a Minolta XD7 hadn't even been typed up and the thing sold - he's had it for well over a year.

I had a long chat with him and he reckons when all the furlough schemes end and the reality of mass unemployment bites, he'll be getting lots more stuff offered. All markets are different needless to say.

Who do you use in Plymouth Charles? I always found London Camera Exchange fair, but that was when they were at Frankfort Gate when a guy called David was manager.

John - I have a great relationship with Russell at SoPerfect Images on the Barbican. He sells only film cameras, films of all sorts, developing stuff and lots of esoterica. Until recently London Camera Exchange sent all the people looking to PX film cameras to him, but they've started selling film stuff again, although not a lot.

He's very sensible on film prices and it does turn over regularly.

I also review film cameras for his website. Annoyingly, someone actually bought a Rolleiflex from him after my review. Until then, I'd had a 100% track record of failure!

Probably a fair number of people with spending money were not working as much and could spend time on eBay shopping, it also can be comforting to some to buy something. How so many get into huge credit card debts for non-essentials....

Since our culture is based on consumerism it follows that being able to buy something, anything, is reassuring. I get a sense of it myself, it's nice to have something coming in the mail when not much else is going on. I know my wife shops for small items regularly as a way to unwind. I don't like this but it's not been a problem so long as it's within limits.

I know that when I decide to switch systems or sell a particularly large item or set of gear it's definitely an endorphin rush, same as when you click "buy" on something you probably shouldn't.

Hopefully the next generation has a better understanding of worth and value. Two of my kids are minimalists and save more than I ever did, probably more conservative about their careers and choices as well. Perhaps they saw the struggle thirty years ago and don't want to repeat that?

Thanks Charles. When all this is finally over and we are able to travel and shop freely, I may combine a day out to photograph the Barbican with a visit to his emporium.

Actually, a Lot of out of work folks are Not struggling. They’re getting more money being unemployed and getting govt stimulus. They’re not eating out etc and have “keyboard” money. People are bored and buying toys.

My 2d worth is that ebay's prices have always been all over the place and so nothing has changed much.

Alas, I still haven't found a Summilux at a silly price but apart from that...

Regards, David
