Borrowing a pal's 40mm Ultron, and I really like the lens. Seems, though, that the contacts aren't working... When the lens is mounted up on my D700 or my N90S, the cameras have no aperture control (the way they would an AF-D lens). Am I doing something wrong, or is the CPU dead?

If the aperture is set to F22 and you have no aperture control then there is a problem with the CPU.

Yep, that's the case. I have to tell the d700 to treat it like a non CPU lens. Is that a thing that Voigtlander would fix at a reasonable cost? (If I were to, say, buy the lens off my friend)

This sounds like a weakness in an otherwise great lens. I've read not a few complaints about failed CPUs in this line, and in fact got a great deal on one myself because the chip was not working (it's okay, it went onto my FM3a where it's lived ever since.)

"CPU's ? hah ! we don't need no stinking cpu's in our CV lenses...."
scoffs and walks off....
The 40mm Ultron I have doesn't come with a CPU - as it is the original chrome version. Only the newer black one has the CPU built in - can I take it you have borrowed the latter version?

I am borrowing the later version, yes. And ordinarily I would not care, and it would live on my F3 or F2. But I love the focal length as a work lens on the D700, and the lens is so short that I find getting to the aperture ring quickly on a big digital body to be more frustrating than using the command dial. Also in a work situation I like all my controls to be standardized.
Not necessary, of course, but nice.
Is it safe to assume the chip is the same as the dandelion chips you can get on ebay? that is to say, could I replace the CPU myself?

Hmm, I'm going to have to check to see if my CV 40's chip works with my F6.

What aperture is set on the lens?
Does the camera record focal length in EXIF or nothing?

Just checked my CV 40 Ultron on my F6. When the aperture dial is set to minimum, the camera body is able to control the aperture in P and also in A if I choose to use a command dial instead of the aperture ring.
Same for my Zeiss ZF.2 Makro Planar 50.
