Crack on new Leica M2, something to worry about?

I've shot a test roll, that I plan on developing tomorrow so that should tell me if there is any light leak issues from the crack (I'm assuming). I am also going to call the seller and see what they have to say about it. Thanks for the information, what kind of black sealant would you recommend if I ended up keeping the body and wanted to apply it myself?

Thanks

I agree with calling the owner. I think you should make sure that you are happy that the price you ultimately pay reflects the damage.

As to the sealant I was thinking of nothing more high tech than a bituminous asphalt sealant. Here in Australia it can be bought in 1 litre cans to be troweled onto surfaces (say brick courses below ground) to seal them from the ingress of water. (Just make sure you get the trowelable version not the paintable one.) Its cheap, sticks like crazy and dries hard yet flexible. I bought some to fix a small piece of missing vulcanite and you now cannot tell it was missing so its very good for that too.

Others have suggested JB weld. Yes that sounds as if it would work just fine - so long as its not translucent.

Another product we have here in Oz is a hard putty like epoxy that contains steel particles and is used to fill holes in steel. This is more like a "bog" though and would produce a lump on the inside of the camera as it does not flow like the other two suggestions.

This is it. http://www.selleys.com.au/putty/epoxy/knead-it-steel

PS in your photo it looks as if the edges of the crack are misaligned. I would be inclined to try to get them as close together as possible before gluing / sealing.

That camera was dropped when base was off. The CLA was to recover the damage done.

I would think it will not get worse, but the camera value is gone to next owner. I hope you got it cheap.

I received a copy of the invoice just now in the mail. The camera was overhauled by sherry in late august. Knowing that the camera was overhauled and everything checks out other than the crack which doesnt cause light leaks. What would a fair price be for the camera? It is an m2 w timer.

Thanks

"There are scratches and scuffs throughout the camera body, but nothing out of the ordinary for a good used M2 of this vintage."

Yeah, right...

I've spoken to an employee there and they seem to be very honest people, which leads me to believe it was just a slip up. I am not judging the character of the seller, I am just trying to figure out what a reasonable price for this camera is. The camera itself seems to work fine, I just don't want to overpay for a camera with a crack on the body.

I'd take a fair price for one in similar condition and subtract the cost of a seamless repair, plus another $100, plus a little sumthin for pain and suffering 😉. Even with a good repair, it will never be valued the same as one without a crack.

Just spoke with the shop and I am going to return it for the full refund plus whatever I pay for shipping back to them. Like I said, these guys seem to be real nice and understanding. They checked to see if they had any other Leica M's I may be interested in and were very apologetic about the whole situation. I will be returning it soon, maybe take it easy on the search for a Leica and continue to use my R2M and try not to compare it to the M2. Thanks everyone for the replies and suggestions, till this one I've never seen an M with a crack through the metal body. The admin can close this thread if they see fit.

Well it looks to me like it has been recovered along with any service, so yes, perhaps it has had a hard life, and now its ready for its second life! For such a pathetic crack I would just seal it with some black superglue that will run into the crack (to make it light tight). No nonsense about thick glues or putty. I doubt it would leak light anyway.
