When he was editor of the BJ, his tests of equipment, especially lenses, would come out months later than anyone else because, as he said, it took time to do it right. There were a lot of anxious people waiting for Geoffrey's reviews, including the folks who had written earlier ones.

He understood film and film developers better than anyone I knew, and I knew several of the top photochemists, and yet, early in the game, spotted the potential of digital photography.

Arthritis crippled his early desire to become a concert pianist and gave photography a brilliant gentleman.

Ten years ago, I chanced accross a reprint of his review of the Leica M5 from the British Journal of Photography. So I went out and bought the camera, a purchase I've never regreted. Coincidentally, I was re-reading the same review last week, as I had recommended it to a forum member.

I have subscribed to Amateur Photographer for almost 20 years, even though it is a British publication and I live in California, and I always eagerly looked for more of his outstanding, smart articles about camera equipment and many other topics. He was so bright and erudite, and I will miss his writings immensely!
