I was out of work from 10/08 until last year. There were plenty of part time gigs, but money was tight. I am now able to consider new purchases . The point is that you might need that money to eat, so be careful.
Sorry to hear you are heading down the unemployment road. Not fun. Good luck!

Take any spare cash and buy silver ingot as a retirement gift to yourself.
Yeah, the silver I bought in2000 did better than the cameras I bought that year...

these threads almost always amaze me...why i am still surprised amazes me as well.
why is it that gear is looked upon by some as such an evil thing!
do painters get criticized for wanting new oils, acrylics or brushes?
i own 2 'good' cameras and a pricey point and shoot...that's it!
so getting another camera is such a sin? all my gear together didn't cost as much as a leica monochrom...or a noctolux...
I am a gearhead by definition, and still think the purchase should wait...
If you choose other than I chose, I am sure you will enjoy your purchase. I just can't say "go for it"...
can you get me a black one richard?
who's richard? lol

Joe,
Sorry to learn you are looking for work.
I have nothing original to add. But the way I see it, the SONY has a lovely lens. I think you should buy the camera if you want to. What's the worst that could happen? You loose about a third of the money if you decide to sell it in a couple of months.

i don't like the camera.
Think it's a monster sized, Point and Shoot.
i love small P/S and use them mostly.
Life changed dramatically after my Heart Excitement.
While my Canadian Pension slowly kicked in, the money flowed faster out, than a river in flood..
Priorities changed.
Now the Canadian Pension is great with all the extras..TG for Medical!
I have often looked at a certain camera.
I simply prefer smaller. So on a whim passing the W store, bought another P/S by Canon. It was down marked to $70. My Powershot after 70,000 images and many gravity tests no longer has flash.
Buy what you really need..
These forums usually say "Buy this, buy that!"
Most replies are truly good advice.

I'm always surprised that people can get lousy pictures from great cameras :bang:NOT the camera's fault....
Buying stuff when you're down is a quick fix with just a short term effect. But I don't think Joe is trying a quick fix.
Going to NYC first might be a good idea. It gives time to think it over and try it in store before you buy. But seeing the results by good photographers, the RX1 gives great pictures - so, if it fits your hands: go for it!

Would like to see some more dog pictures - sounds a great companion very worthy of a few more frames. Venison too?
Lots of great RFF guys in or near NYC - sounds a good idea for a trip.

Joe,
I think it depends whether you can live without built-in viewfinder or not.
Until Sony came up with RX-2 (or whatever) with a b.i.v, I'd rather go with Fuji X-Pro and the likes, which you already have, don't you?

As long as your dog can continue to eat venison (or some other game meat) then of course, get what you want--and if, in time, you find that you don't (want) it can always be sold and looked at as a cheap rental...
