Welcome to this critique thread. Please read the purpose statement and the guidelines/ground rules regarding participation.

Purpose
The primary purpose of this thread is to provide a forum where photographers can give and receive constructive criticism on one another's photographs. By setting up some basic guidelines we hope that this thread will provide a forum where the give and take of honest constructive criticism can help us become better photographers.

Guidelines/Ground Rules
The thread has very specific rules regarding participation. The one basic rule is that you cannot provide criticism on an image or comment in a critique thread unless you also have an image posted. To post an image to this thread you must be a participant. Participation in this thread is limited. Here are the guidelines and ground rules for participation:

• Participation in this thread is limited to 5 photographers
• Participants join the thread by posting their intention. You can simply reply with your intent to join by posting something like: "I'm joining," "I'm in," or just state your name
• Joining is on a "first come, first served" basis. The first 5 to reply become the participants.
• Please, only join this thread if you are able post an image within 24 hours of joining.
• Once the thread has 5 participants, no other photographers can join or participate in the thread
• Once the thread is full of participants all photographers will upload their image(s)
• Please abide by any thematic requirement (e.g., landscape, portrait, etc.)
•The number of photos for each participant is limited to one
• Photographers attach photos as thumbnails (no inline images or links)
• Photos should be standard screen resolution (72~90) and the longest side of the image approximately 10 inches in length.
• Photographers post their images supplying titles (if any) and other pertinent information (the amount of information should be minimal)
• Photographers can only comment on their own images and reply to comments only when everyone else in the thread has posted their comments on the image
• Every participant must comment on every photo (except their own—initially)
• Every participant must make at least two comments, one positive comment, and one constructive criticism (which is actually two positive comments)
• Once every photographer has commented then a free flowing discussion begins. It is at this point that every photographer can comment on their own work and reply to comments, ask questions, etc.
• The participants decide when the thread closes.

attached, sorry for size.

ampguy: The shining eyes of the cats make this image. Everything else is not needed as much. I would crop horizontally down from the top to make the image more interesting. Nice catch.

thelovecollect: This street scene could have been made more interesting by using a larger aperture setting to make the people in the photo softer.

garethc: This is a good capture with nice choice of aperture for the background. The area to the left of the boy is not needed. If cropped, the image becomes stronger and more emphasis is given to the pointing finger.

Nico: The faces of these four children are telling stories; they are "the image". Maybe, cropping from below to waist level and making the faces more prominent will draw more focus to the faces. Nice.

ampguy: Wow, those eyes! I would love to see those 2 pairs of eyes filling the frame. You didn't have much choice but the rest of the scene doesn't hold much interest and it would be hard to close in as I imagine the subjects might have fled.

thelovecollect: I love the tonal range in this image. In fact the subject matter is the kind of thing I love but somehow never think to capture. The whiteness of the board works well sitting in shadow. The human element is needed I think but could be less distracting (less DOF). Finally the only thing I would want to change is to have slightly more space at the bottom of the sign so it feels more 'grounded'.

Nico: I love the variation in the childrens faces. The fact that some are aware of the camera and others aren't. There is a lot of interesting 'narrative' that a viewer could decide for themselves here. The boy on the left looks slightly awkward and seems the odd one out. Perhaps it would have been nice to see the feet of the second boy from the left. Otherwise a tighter crop on the childrens faces would have really pushed the character of this image even further.

RaidAmin: I love that the texture of the sea and sand merge together so well to create an almost seamless backdrop, the limited tonal range helps too. I wonder how the image would look cropped at the edge to make the subjects less centred and maybe cropped at the bottom too to allow the tide mark to act as a visual hook to guide the viewers eyes.

Thelovereview -- Fish Tales

I like this specials sign very much. The angle of the sidewalk lines, and maybe the shadows at the top make me want to see more of what's going on around on the street, although the sign itself is interesting.

GarethC -- Piggy Back

Very nice, the expression on the boy's face, and his gesture, along with the expression on the pig's face make this a great photo. The bright white thing behind them is a little distracting.

Nico -- Alfama kids

This took me a few views to appreciate. My initial reaction was "what's going on here?" Everything is in focus. What are they doing? But after looking at it for awhile, the questions and unique individual expressions, directions of looks, and ages of the kids makes it a very interesting photo.

Raid -- Children and Environment

I like this very much. Very clean and uncluttered, not too close, and not too far. excellent exposure and composition. The clouds at the upper left trick me initially into thinking the composition is lobsided, but a quick measurement shows the horizon flat. Great job!!

About mine, yes, without the cats eyes, there is nothing, but I feel the surrounding elements add context, it was a grab shot on a p&s digital with flash but no editing. I find it interesting that the cats have different color eyes, and no red eye ;)

ampguy: this image definitely draws your attention to the animals. i don't think this image would work at all if the eyes were not glowing. you can say it's a commentary on how wildlife and humans view each other, always from a distance, always with caution. the noise from your digital capture does prohibit some details that would have been better captured with film...

garethc: good exposure. nice tones. the boy that points...to something. what is he pointing to? or is he just casually observing. the subject may not be the boy at all, it could be the pig...lots of questions on this image. but maybe there are more from this series that helps me figure it out...

nico: this image has a nostalgic feeling to it. the older male is carefully watching you as if he is the guardian over these children. the younglings are off distracted while the boy up front stares at you with wonder...it needs a little more contrast..

raid: a majestic backdrop for your children. i can only imagine what they are thinking when surrounded by the ocean. there is a lack of contrast but the kids are framed such a way that the focus is on their wonder and innocence...with some contrast correction in the darkroom, this would make a memorable print..
