Welcome to this critique thread. Please read the purpose statement and the guidelines/ground rules regarding participation.

Purpose
The primary purpose of this thread is to provide a forum where photographers can give and receive constructive criticism on one another's photographs. By setting up some basic guidelines we hope that this thread will provide a forum where the give and take of honest constructive criticism can help us become better photographers.

Guidelines/Ground Rules
The thread has very specific rules regarding participation. The one basic rule is that you cannot provide criticism on an image or comment in a critique thread unless you also have an image posted. To post an image to this thread you must be a participant. Participation in this thread is limited. Here are the guidelines and ground rules for participation:

• Participation in this thread is limited to 5 photographers
• Participants join the thread by posting their intention. You can simply reply with your intent to join by posting something like: "I'm joining," "I'm in," or just state your name
• Joining is on a "first come, first served" basis. The first 5 to reply become the participants
• Once the thread has 5 participants, no other photographers can join or participate in the thread
• Once the thread is full of participants all photographers will upload their image(s)
• The number of photos for each participant is limited to one
• Photographers attach photos as thumbnails (no inline images or links)
• Photographers post their images supplying titles (if any) and other pertinent information (the amount of information should be minimal)
• Photographers can only comment on their own images and reply to comments only when everyone else in the thread has posted their comments on the image
• Every participant must comment on every photo (except their own—initially)
• Every participant must make at least two comments, one positive comment, and one constructive criticism (which is actually two positive comments)
• Once every photographer has commented then a free flowing discussion begins. It is at this point that every photographer can comment on their own work and reply to comments, ask questions, etc.
• The participants decide when the thread closes.

Oh, my, does this mean I have to go first?

Morning paper: Nicely framed (cropped?) with the window framing. Nice tonal control. A cup of coffee on the subjects left would have been nice.
'
No title: Nice depth and exposure. Good control of exposure. I think I would prefer it without the cow.

dog trick: Motion nicely indicated. No in your control but it would have been cute if the dog were looking at you (us). The truck does blend a bit into the background.

summer festival: A lot of activity but my eyes were attracted (well, not right away, OK?) to the flags, red up close, white in the distance. Since most people are looking away from the camera it might have been more interesting if the girl in yellow was as well. She does not fit (no pun intended) with the flow of eye traffic.

Quite a variety as was expected.

Your pic definately conveys that rainy day feeling, especially being shot through the rainsoaked window pane, a moody shot. I guess if I had to suggest something I would either doge or crop out the blocked up shadowc in the lower right of the frame, good work!

A really amazing scene, it looks like a dairy cow on the edge of a moon crater. The contrast and light along with the "sandy" looking grain in the sky make this a very surreal looking image, pretty cool. At first I wanted to crop some of the lower portion out but the foreground seems as important to the image as the background, IMHO, leave it like it is, nice work!

nice grab, great sense of motion through the trees, nothing is really sharp but that doesn't seem to detract from this shot. Technically there isn't much you could have done on a shot like this unless you had time to prefocus, it works like it is, pretty cool!

you've captured a festive atmosphere in this one, alot to see. I like the girl offset to the left of the frame, I find my eye keeps coming back to her. I like the fact that you were able to get close to her with the 21mm :). It would have been great if she was looking your way but that's not under your control in this pic. What's interesting is to see how this image changes when you cover the right side, from the flags over, the image becomes all about her and what she's looking at. The flags and other patrons detract from her as the subject, it's sort of an image inside an image, good job.

Hello all; sorry for my tardiness.

Okay, the rainy day shot: I like the Steichen-esque quality of street landscapes like this and the rain on the windows really makes this photo. If I could change anything it would be to have a definite center to the composition.

The morn paper: a great quiet mood created here with the boat and the intent posture of the subject. A half-stop more light would have resolved the shadow detail better; the blank black part is a little troubling.

Bossie on a hill: I really love the contrast between the illuminated Gurnsey (Jersey?) and the otherwise flat landscape; you might even highlight this a bit more with some (subtle) and very selective print bleaching on the white + toning for the black. Did I mention I love this one?

Festival: The emptiness of the forground is an interesting compositional choice. I find my eye drawn to that amulet she's playing with, and wondering what it means--is it a Wicca-fest? I might try for some eye contact to create a kind of tension with the viewer.

Nicely sad. Office or home complex, view into a "boring" street scene. I feel like I just got up, or am looking out the window during work, too much rain to go out, what are we going to do today ? I like pictures like this, they trigger mellow emotions, a bit like listening to Pink Floyd's "Breakfast in Los Angeles" (Ummagumma).

Interesting, good catch. Nothing in focus, strong movement, passing this car on the left: "this a dog ?" ... "why is the dog in the driver's seat ?" ... Freeway, must be in GB or Australia ... Reminds me of these many glances that you get when driving a car, unfortunately many of them are forgotten too quickly.

I really liked your picture. It reminds me of the visits to the Rhine river that my parents took me to as a kid. I feel drawn into the observer room due to its blackness, and because the window frames coincide so nicely with the picture frame. Also, I like that the window is asymmetric (left/right). Initially the focus is on the observer, but then I feel like him, relax like him, and look out at the water. After a while I was bothered by a little too much black and not enough of the water ... I think a bit of a crop would make it perfect for me, I attach what I mean, hope you don't mind.

Oops, you picture is jumping out of the other three. Totally different reaction when I see it, triggers a different part of my brain. I start at the girl on the left, all yellow, well proportioned :), not too happy. Then my eyes move around: lots of information, the first set of flags, the second, the wind, the clouds, lot's of colour, must be noisy; lots of people everywhere, many familiies and kids, but right next to me, nobody but that cute girl in the yellow shirt. She does have nice hands .... Time to start over again :)

I looked at your photo without reading the title initially, it didn't really do much. But with the title it all makes sense. I like that huge expanse of black at the bottom and the almost painful daylight in the top - just like my mornings :). Nicely proportioned and framing of the ships in the window.

It would be cool to see this shot without the the torrent soaked window too. I find there's just a bit too much water, especially in the top right quarter. But it does bring back strong "deja vu"(sp?) of Indian monsoon - nicely captured moment.

I was looking at all of these photos last night on the monitor at home and it can't be calibrated very well because I was wondering for a short while what on earth that thing was on the grass. I can feel the morning freshness looking at this photo and my eye being drawn to the cow is guided around the lake/coast easily. Maybe it's cows in general but looking at the photo is really stands out - super high contrast amidst the low contrast sky, land and water - nice effect, did you dodge and burn it? I'd love to see a print of this.
I can't decide whether it would but maybe getting rid of some of that blank space in the bottom left hand corner?

American car.. America... left-hand drive... bloody hell! A dog driving a car!
I like the charcoal effect of the photo, the camera shake doesn't detract from the photo - a shot to glance at and then come back to a second later wondering if you saw what you saw. It would have been cooler if the photo was a little bigger and there was more of the car visible, but maybe you had to crop out the inside of your car?


That's it. I feel sheepish commenting on these photos BTW I could not have done better.

Popart, I'm trying to get this kind of high-contrast but failing with HP5. Is this the TriX+Rodinal look or did you have to do something special?
 
Roland, great crop, I had settled on a similar version as the final crop. When I took this one I was interested in getting a silhouette but I figured there would be more shadow detail in the pic, I metered on the glass. Great suggestions and thanks to all participants.
