Welcome to this critique thread. Please read the purpose statement and the guidelines/ground rules regarding participation.

Purpose
The primary purpose of this thread is to provide a forum where photographers can give and receive constructive criticism on one another's photographs. By setting up some basic guidelines we hope that this thread will provide a forum where the give and take of honest constructive criticism can help us become better photographers.

Guidelines/Ground Rules
The thread has very specific rules regarding participation. The one basic rule is that you cannot provide criticism on an image or comment in a critique thread unless you also have an image posted. To post an image to this thread you must be a participant. Participation in this thread is limited. Here are the guidelines and ground rules for participation:

• Participation in this thread is limited to 5 photographers
• Participants join the thread by posting their intention. You can simply reply with your intent to join by posting something like: "I'm joining," "I'm in," or just state your name
• Joining is on a "first come, first served" basis. The first 5 to reply become the participants
• Once the thread has 5 participants, no other photographers can join or participate in the thread
• Once the thread is full of participants all photographers will upload their image(s)
• The number of photos for each participant is limited to one
• Photographers attach photos as thumbnails (no inline images or links)
• Photographers post their images supplying titles (if any) and other pertinent information (the amount of information should be minimal)
• Photographers can only comment on their own images and reply to comments only when everyone else in the thread has posted their comments on the image
• Every participant must comment on every photo (except their own—initially)
• Every participant must make at least two comments, one positive comment, and one constructive criticism (which is actually two positive comments)
• Once every photographer has commented then a free flowing discussion begins. It is at this point that every photographer can comment on their own work and reply to comments, ask questions, etc.
• The participants decide when the thread closes.

I'll bow out to open the door for anyone new to the critiques to join in the fun.

No reason to wait for everyone, is there? Might as well post the pics if you have them. I'm going to soup some rolls right now.

hmm

hmm

there is probably something to this rule below -- possibly early posting before the 5 in the group are filled will lead to selective picking of groups, or a particularly difficult, or easy image may sway someone to pass or join ?? just guessing here, Ray??

OK, I enjoyed the one I've already done, so I'm in this one too - I'll dash off and scan the negs that came out of the soup yesterday and see what I have.

Here is my photo. It shows my two girls enjoying the beach.

OK, here's mine. I didn't go for anything from yesterday's soup session (cos it's all similar in theme to my other one).

This one is taken with a Bessa-L and CV 21/4 on Velvia 50. It's a close crop from a wider view (the wider view just didn't work).

Raid -- girls on beach

Raid -- girls on beach

I like the expressions on your daughters faces, and the way your daughter's feet on the right are just dangling off the step stool which shows how tiny she is. They both seem content, even though it appears to be a windy and overcast day at the beach.

The background seems a little busy, some of it is interesting, the seagulls, and the OOF metal detector person. Other parts of the background seem confusing, the two couples in non-beach clothing are underexposed. I have to turn my monitor controls way up to see the outline of the person huddling up against the larger person.

I'm wondering how this would have worked with a narrower DOF? It's an excellent photo of your daughters.

Oscroft -- water spray

Oscroft -- water spray

It took me a while to figure out what this is, and I'm not sure I still know. Is it gutters on the street, or are they application specific gutters on some kind of equipment?

The circular patterned squares seem to not be aligned to potentially make a circle with four squares, which seems may have been the manufacturer's goal?

The reflective wet textures and spray emanating from the oval circles of the squares within squares is appealing.

The fact that the circular patters are not aligned makes me want to jump into the picture and try to align them!! I wonder what answers, if any, the uncropped version has??

Shutterflower - girl in grey

Shutterflower - girl in grey

It appears to be an office girl taking a smoking break. Her outfit goes well with the wall, and the cement square she appears to be leaning against.

The exposure and colors are excellent. It looks like a candid moment where she is massaging her belly and scratching her foot.

I would consider cropping the left vertical wall lines out and seeing if you could straighten the cement pole right lines parallel to the R edge.

George: It helps that the woman in your photo is staring outward and that there are beautiful geometrical patterns on the left of the photo.I would suggest that if you had anchored the patterns by eliminating the rightmost parts of the photo beyond the concrete pillar. This will also remove the only nonsymmetrical part and make the image more abstract. I like it.
