An interesting "human interest" photo. It is a little too high-key for my taste, I would try to burn in some details lost in the highlights, and get some more mid-tones to stand out, but I don't know if you've chosen this contrast for a reason, and if you have, it eludes me.varjag said:Taken in Minsk, Belarus this January.
I like the contrast between the cold, as we see by the clothing, and the warmth of the body language and closeness of the couple.
I would tilt this counter-clockwise so that the horizon marked by the river bank were straight (horizontal). That's all.

The bus is well-placed on the left side of the frame, and leads your eye to the man about to board the bus (or so it seems), and then the girl behind the booth that is seemingly interacting with the photographer, either playfully or passively making her "uncomfort" be known. The fence and building in the background and to the right close the framing.back alley said:winter on whyte ave

Interesting use of lines, and the shadow, which falls and ends on the man with the cowboy hat. The shadow divides the bottom part in half and also in three sections, and also serves to anchor, when it ends on the man, to mark a division line in the composition for the middle (vertical) third of the scene.
There is a lot to see here, yet they all seem to play as one. To me, anyway. I don't get "distracted" by elements of a scene, I see them as part of it
I think this photo would benefit highly of the use of stronger contrast, with richer shadows and midtones.

Gabriel, this was a hip shot, and I think this photo was just blind luck: the foot, the motion, composition, everything. Maybe I was concious of what I wanted, and in the end that made a difference, but really, I'm not sure I was paying that much attention.Gabriel M.A. said:I like the feeling in this photo. There certainly some "technical" issues with this. Being petty and ordinary, I wonder if there would be some that would ask why you cut off the woman's foot off the frame. But looking at "the big picture", I see it gives it a further sense of motion, the action is in the frame, and moving out of it.
It looks like a "hip" shot, yet there's a sense of conscious composition decision due to the zoning by the sidewalk, street, and bridge.
Some more info: This picture was taken in September 2005, at an RFF meet in London. The woman in the photo is my wife, and the two guys on the left are Tom and Vincent, both members here. It was totally a grab shot; I was trying to get pictures of the members on our day out, without any of them complaining - you know how photographers get when you try to take their picture!
My biggest complaint with the photo is the blur in Jo's face; she's just not sharp enough. I was zone focussed for too great of a distance, and the exposure was pretty awful, too. I toyed with converting the shot to black and white, but it just looked worse.
In the end, I feel it's just "OK". There is probably an emotional factor affecting my judgement: I have memories of the day, but the photo doesn't live up to those memories, and therefore, the photo is no good.
I'm quite happy with your responses. You all seem to see more in it than I do, and it makes me feel good to know that maybe it's an interesting photograph. I may now be motivated enough to spend more time on it, to try and get more from the scan. Thanks to everyone.

Heh heh. Nice to see, and to feature in a critique thread at last!
I really have to eat less; I would add much more weight to the composition now. And I miss those trainers.
I won't retaliate with a photo; don't want to mess up the thread, but I do have one that would really do the job

Tom, I'm curious to see this picture... Perhaps you can put it online somewhere, and then just post the link?
