Steve Bingley & I, on different days, have been to see the Photography in Mexico & Dijkstra exhibits at SF MOMA. Some comments appear on Steve's Flickr site. I happened to like Mexico better than Dijkstra, but others may respond the other way around.

The Mexico show has lots of strong BW work, past & present.

I recommend these shows to everyone individually. They might also afford reason/excuse for a gathering.

I have seen both shows a number of times and I really enjoyed the Mexico show in particular. I wasn't familiar with Bravo and some other artists and found their work quite compelling.

We may just have to all meet up again and take another spin through before it runs it's course!

I'd be up for it. Haven't seen the Mexico show yet. I went hear Dijkstra give a talk at the opening for her show, but of her work I found the Almerisa series (portraits of a Bosnian refugee girl from ages of 6 to 21) to be of most interest. I had also seen them at Pier24 last year.
 
Seems many of us local yokels frequent the photography shows at SFMOMA -- we could use this to make more casual meetups on short notice. Saves beer, mimimizes risk of law enforcement involvement.
 
It's true, Peter, "Bingley" is my nom de photo only, not my surname. My love for Jane Austin only goes so far. 🙂

Thanks, Kirk, for the mention. I thought the Photography of Mexico exhibit was superb, a real eye opener. I was unfamiliar w/ the photos of Manual Alvarez Bravo and enjoyed those on display so much I bought the book... As for the Dijkstra exhibit, some of her portraits impressed me but overall my reaction was so-so.

But Photography in Mexico rates a return visit.
 
Steve, I'm up for checking out Mexico whenever you're ready for an encore. Bravo rocks. I agree about Dijkstra -- kinda meh, except for the Almerisa series which reminded me of Nicholas Nixon's annual portraits of the Brown sisters over decades.

P.S. The real Bingley would spell Jane's name "Austen". 🙂
 
I have a soft spot for Mexican photography so the exhibit at SFMOMA was a sight to behold. I too loved Mariana Yampolsky's photographs as well as those by Hector Garcia and Oscar Fernando Gómez who was a taxi driver turned photographer. Really good stuff.
 
Yampolsky's collection was pretty impressive. My favorite shot of the whole show was of the "Suburban Girl" coming home from a rave. Great story behind it, beautifully shot by Cartagena I believe.

The Mexico exhibit goes until July 8th, plenty of time to set up a visit.

Excellent point Peter! Mike will have time to serve his 30 day sentence for indecent exposure outside the local bingo parlor.
 
Hmm, difficult to delete self-incriminating posts here w/o leaving tracks. May be a civil rights issue.
