It's been suggested I look at the M4-P for a working analogue M-body (no batteries need apply). It was also suggested I look for an early serial number without the zinc top.

When was the cut off for the zinc top? I don't see a mention of it in Gandy's list of M serial numbers?

I believe the M4-P was manufactured with a brass top until 1984. Only the latest models made at the same time as the M6 have zinc tops. It is kind of easy to tell : brass top have recessed RF/VF windows (embossed) while the later zinc tops have flush windows just like on the M6.

My M4-P is a 1605*** and has the brass top plate with recessed windows and the two sync outlets. Since the SN# of the M4-P is engraved in the hot shoe it is quite easy to exchange the top plates and I have seen many ads on Evilbay and Yahoo auctions for M4-P top plates.
