cv 15mm seriously vignettes

The CV wides I have (15/4.5 Super Wide Heliar, 21/4 LTM and 28/3.5 Color Skopar) do all vignet. Although I find the grade of vignetting quite acceptable on film, especially for landscapes, where I even find the darkening of the sky wishable.

But used on a R-D1, the vignetting effect is multiplied because of the sensor design. The sensor is not very savvy with those deeply protruding, non rectilinear lens designs, a problem that Leica has (partially) solved with their M8 sensor, incamera software and lens codings.

You gotta live with it. The Epson PhotoRAW devignetting feature works until a certain level. If you do not apply many other tweaks like AE correction, contrast curves, unsharp masking, color filters and so on, the noise produced by the antivignetting algorithm is acceptable. But if added to a lot of other tweaks, it makes the pictures useless.

The Summicron 28 vignets like the Color Skopar 28, I have no knowledge about other Leica wides concerning this issue. Afaik, the Zeiss 15, 18 and 21mm wides do also vignet, but significantly less than the CV ones (especially if used on film). Alas, on the Epson, I fear almost any wide will produce a certain amount of vignetting dued to the sensor design.

Here's an image from my widest lens the 21mm Skopar. One without any correction and one with Epson Raw anti-vignetting set at 35mm with all sliders on zero. There is plenty of room to apply more correction, but as Didier says it may degrade quality somewhat.

This shot highlights the vignetting, normally I don't notice it with the 21mm but the 15mm will be quite different I imagine.

Thank you very much for posting those images. Of course, given the beautiful subject I forgot why I requested shots for a few moments.

From these examples it appears the Epson software flattens out the areas where vignetting was corrected. I'll be curious to experiment with Lightroom or Photoshop to see how that approach compares.

To be honest, I actually like the vignetting. It can be a beast if you want to crop after the fact but I do like the feel.
