Some good news instead of the Thambar nonsense:

Seems much smaller than the 35/1.2 and 50/1.1. Initial price is 120,000 yen (remember the 35/1.2 II is 135,000 yen).

They also (finally) updated the 40mm external finder to the metal version.

EDIT

USA Price is $899
Estimated Shipping date December 1st

Love it. Much shorter than the previous 35/1.2.
How about the framelines, it will bring up 35 or 50mm framelines?

No focus tab as well and no correct frames, except some out of production film bodies. One of them is tiny. And you are saying Thambar is the nonsense?...

I guess, M is new adaptall.

You, Ko.Fe, are the pessimist's pessimist. ;)

For someone who has a CV 40mm 1.4, what does this bring to the table? Serious question, not just talking about aperture opening.

This lens does look very nice.

50 frameline

50 frameline

Very nice, same hood as for 35mm 1.2.
If the framelines are 35 I am in.

nope, it brings up the 50 frameline.

40/1.4 buyers often complain of it bringing up the CL/CLE inspired 35 frameline.

The 40/1.2 is too fast for the CL & CLE to focus accurately wide open and close up.

To most M photogs, shooting outside of the 50 frameline for a 40 lens is a lot easier than shooting inside of the 35 frameline.

Over 100g weight savings over the Nokton 1.1 is nice, but I like the compact size and classic rendering of the 40 1.4.

Ill probably end up getting it. Im a sucker for fast normals. Lol

Besides the obvious speed, I would assume better performance on digital due to asph elements (shift in the 40/1.4 is significant). And I'm hoping it has less distortion than the 35/1.2 (as the 50/1.1 is nicely rectilinear).

Looks a bit like a modified Lux ASPH ....

Well, you have to give credit to the Lux for floating elements and APO glass .... Then again, the new Nokton appears to have 4 aspherical surfaces ?!

Roland.

Is this the first new M mount since Tom A passed ?
We all became used to his early reviews of CV lenses.

The samples of the e-Mount version on FM look pretty nice.
Definitely more calm oof area than the f1.4/40mm Nokton.
Would love to see some B+W film samples.
This could be the "One Lens" for my M5 :D

Aspherics aside, move the fourth element of the Lux all the way to the back, and you have almost the exact same configuration. Looking at the E-mount samples, it renders pretty much like the Lux as well!

This 40/1.2 is an ultra-corrected, retrofocus, modern lens. So expect good performance wide open and clinical sharpness (that would have to be sufficient for a 42MP sensor in the E mount version) stopped down. The 40/1.4 is a classic design primarily made to exploit its signature, which is in line with the similar 35/1.4.

This is interesting. I used to love the 40/1.4, but the shift was too much on digital.

I was already I’m done with buying lenses, but this goes on the list!
